Chapter 1

He grabbed the fallen phone from the ground and shoved it toward the waitress without taking his eyes off the old man.
“Call an ambulance!”
The waitress fumbled for the phone, already nodding, her face pale under the neon.
Mr. Joe’s fingers twitched.
His breath rattled in the quiet alley.
Ryder leaned closer, his voice dropping from rough to shaken.
“Stay with me.”
But Mr. Joe wasn’t pointing at Ryder.
He was pointing at the wallet.
Ryder looked down.
Inside the cracked leather was a faded photograph.
A little boy stood in the sun beside a younger Mr. Joe, holding a sandwich in both hands like it was treasure.
At their feet sat another dog, smaller than Buddy, with the same bright eyes.
Ryder stopped moving.
The alley noise seemed to fall away.
His fingers reached for the photograph, but they trembled before they touched it.
The boy in the picture had dirt on his face.
A torn sleeve.
A guarded stare.
Ryder knew that stare.
He had worn it before the leather jacket, before the motorcycle, before the world taught him to look dangerous first.
It was him.
Buddy whined and pressed his head near Mr. Joe’s hand.
The waitress stood behind them, tears gathering but not stepping in, as if she understood this moment belonged to the man, the dog, and the truth between them.
Ryder lifted the photograph slowly.
His throat tightened around the question before he could stop it.
“You knew me?”
Mr. Joe’s eyes fluttered.
His hand rose weakly and found Ryder’s wrist.
Just a touch.
Barely there.
But it carried years.
Then his hand slipped halfway down before Ryder caught it.
Buddy raised his head.
The first ambulance siren appeared far away, thin and faint over the desert road.
Ryder gripped the old photo in one hand and Mr. Joe’s wrist in the other.
His voice broke into something softer than anyone would expect from a man like him.
“Stay with me, old man.”
Buddy’s howl rose through the alley, long and aching.
And Ryder stared toward the distant siren, holding the proof of a kindness he had forgotten but never truly escaped.
