Chapter 18 - The Phone.

Ashley looked terrified until she started talking. Then she looked angry, which was much more useful.
She testified that her father had become jumpy after the freezer incident. He slept with the television on. He snapped at her younger sister for leaving boots by the door. He hid a second phone and once said, thinking she was asleep on the couch, “I should’ve never let those rich people pull me into this.”
The prosecution introduced the extracted messages.
Dean Barlow: Need room secure tonight.
Walt: Release still off.
Dean: Leave it.
Later:
Walt: It’s done.
Dean: Cash tomorrow. Different branches.
Then the voicemail from Victor.
Once the payout clears, we’re done.
There it was, no longer rumor.
The defense tried to challenge chain of custody. Tried to imply Ashley was resentful. Tried to suggest “payout” referred to the existing accident claim and not harm to Lena. That might have helped them if the next witness hadn’t been Dr. Erin Patel, Lena’s maternal-fetal specialist.
Dr. Patel explained in calm, devastating detail what subzero exposure and acute stress could do to an eight-month pregnancy. She explained how rapidly labor could accelerate under trauma. She explained that if rescue had been delayed, both Lena and Noah faced serious risk of death.
Not theoretical risk.
Real.
The jury listened in the kind of silence that means people are finally joining the dots themselves.
Then came the punch Victor’s side didn’t expect.
Paige introduced the yellow legal pad from the townhouse box.
Victor’s lawyers objected. Lost.
The jurors saw his handwriting. Saw the claim scenarios. Saw the circled note about a full-term birth reducing “sympathy multiplier.”
The phrase was so clinical it made the room recoil.
During a recess Lena stood in the hallway by a vending machine that only took cards and sometimes rejected those too. A janitor nodded at her and said, “You’re doing good.”
She thanked him like it mattered.
Because it did.
Ordinary people kept handing her back pieces of herself.
Back inside, the prosecutor told the court she had one final item for the next morning.
A forensic accounting summary tracing irregular movements tied to the projected settlement strategy.

Victor finally lost his composure then—not dramatically, just enough to turn toward Dean with visible fury.
Dean did not look back.
