Chapter 7 - RACHEL DIDN'T WANT VALERIA'S LIFE. SHE WANTED MARCUS TO STOP LYING.

Rachel agreed to meet Valeria only after both lawyers approved the conditions.
Public place.
No recording without mutual consent.
No threats.
No promises.
Denise sat at a nearby table.
Rachel arrived five minutes late.
Valeria recognized her immediately.
Not from meeting her.
From Marcus's professional photos.
Rachel Hale was thirty-one.
Dark hair.
Simple coat.
No glamorous entrance.
No obvious villain.
She looked sick with nerves.
The first thing she said was, "I'm sorry."
Valeria almost laughed.
"Which part?"
Rachel looked down.
"Fair."
They sat.
Neither ordered food.
Valeria had imagined this moment in several versions during sleepless nights.
In some, she screamed.
In some, Rachel was smug.
In some, Valeria threw a drink.
Reality was smaller.
Two exhausted women at a restaurant table while a baby monitor app glowed on Valeria's phone because Arthur was watching the twins at the condo.
Rachel folded her hands.
"I believed you were separated."
Valeria stared.
"You came to my house twice."
"For meetings."
"You saw my pregnancy photographs."
Rachel closed her eyes.
"I know."
"So how separated did we look?"
"He said you stayed together for family optics."
"Did you believe that?"
"At first."
"And later?"
Rachel looked away.
"Later I believed what I needed to believe."
That answer earned more respect than an excuse would have.
"When did you know he was lying?"
"After St. Agnes."
Valeria felt her stomach tighten.
"Tell me."
Rachel took a breath.
She and Marcus had begun sleeping together months earlier after working closely on Briar House Development.
Marcus told her his marriage was effectively finished.
Rachel became pregnant.
She told him.
At first he promised support.
Then he began talking about timing.
His career.
The divorce.
Arthur.
The trust.
Valeria's pregnancy.
Rachel had been stunned.
"He hadn't told you I was pregnant?"
"No."
"He told me you and he weren't sleeping together."
Valeria laughed once.
It hurt.
"We were expecting twins."
"I know."
"When did you find out?"
"After."
Rachel's eyes filled.
She miscarried at eight weeks.
St. Agnes treated her.
Marcus did not go.
"He said he couldn't leave because you had an appointment."
Valeria remembered.
Her ultrasound.
The dinner.
The parking lot calls.
"He paid the bill."
"Some of it."
"With my trust money."
Rachel looked shocked.
"I didn't know that."
"Do you have proof you didn't know?"
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
Good answer.
Valeria leaned back.
"What did 'I won't bear this alone ever again' mean?"
Rachel wiped beneath one eye.
"That."
"The miscarriage?"
"Being terrified. Going to the hospital. Him telling me to stop calling because you were asking questions about where he was."
Valeria looked down.
"I'm sorry that happened to you."
Rachel stared.
"You don't have to say that."
"I'm not sorry you slept with my husband."
"I know."
"I'm sorry you miscarried alone."
Rachel cried quietly.
Valeria did not touch her.
Compassion did not require intimacy.
Then Valeria asked the question that mattered.
"Why did you sleep with him again?"
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"Because people can be stupid more than once."
That was human enough to hurt.
Marcus returned after several weeks.
Apologized.
Said he had handled everything badly.
Said he was finally filing for divorce.
Said Arthur was threatening his business future.
Said Valeria hated him.
Said the babies were the only reason he hadn't left yet.
Rachel believed enough of it.
The affair restarted.
Then she became pregnant again.
Eight weeks.
Exactly as she had said on the call.
"Is it Marcus's?"
Rachel looked at her.
"I believe so."
"Believe?"
"I haven't been with anyone else during the relevant period."
Valeria nodded.
That was not legal proof of paternity.
It was enough for the conversation.
"Did Marcus know before the phone call?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Rachel unlocked her phone.
She had already provided copies to Denise.
Now she showed Valeria.
Marcus:
NOT TODAY. DO NOT CALL THE HOUSE.
Rachel:
YOU SAID YOU'D HANDLE IT.
Marcus:
I AM.
Rachel:
LIKE LAST TIME?
No response.
Later:
I'M SERVING PAPERS TOMORROW. DO NOT MAKE THIS WORSE.
Valeria stared.
He had known.
He had served her anyway.
Slapped her.
Then panicked when Rachel called.
"Why did you call?"
Rachel's voice dropped.
"Because he stopped responding."
Valeria nodded.
"And the custody filing?"
Rachel's face hardened.
"I never agreed to testify that you're unfit."
"Marcus listed you."
"I know."
"When did you find out?"
"Yesterday."
"What did you tell him?"
"Take my name off."
"Did he?"
"No."
"Why would he think you'd support him?"
Rachel hesitated.
"Because I told him I thought you were overwhelmed."
Valeria felt anger flash.
"You've never met me."
"I saw him take calls."
"From me?"
"Yes."
"What did he tell you?"
"That you couldn't handle the pregnancy."
Valeria stared.
Rachel continued.
"That you cried constantly."
"I cried."
"That you wouldn't drive."
"My doctor told me not to near the end."
"I didn't know."
"That my father had to manage me?"
"Yes."
Valeria looked away.
Every ordinary vulnerability had been translated into incapacity.
Pregnancy fatigue.
Fear.
Medical restrictions.
Help from family.
Then Rachel said, "He showed me texts."
"My private texts?"
"I think so."
Valeria's jaw tightened.
"He said they proved you were unstable."
"What did you think?"
Rachel hesitated.
"I thought you sounded scared."
That answer surprised Valeria.
"Did you tell him that?"
"Yes."
"What did he say?"
Rachel looked at Denise across the room.
Then back.
"He said scared women make dangerous mothers."
Valeria felt something inside her go cold.
Not anger.
Recognition.
Marcus had not simply wanted a divorce.
He had been building a story about her.
Maybe to protect himself.
Maybe to gain leverage.
Maybe because he believed it.
The reason would matter later.
The effect mattered now.
"Tell me about Briar House."
Rachel's shoulders tightened.
"I did consulting."
"Did you know Marcus was using trust money?"
"No."
"When did you know?"
"After Arthur shouted the number on speaker."
Valeria blinked.
"You heard that?"
"The call connected before I spoke."
Of course.
Rachel had heard Arthur.
"He called it his capital."
"Did he tell you where it came from?"
"He said family investment accounts."
"Did he say mine?"
"No."
"Did he say the twins'?"
"No."
Rachel pulled a folder from her bag.
Denise stood and came closer.
"I brought the project records."
Valeria didn't touch them.
Denise did.
Rachel explained that Marcus had been under pressure to close a capital commitment for Briar House.
A larger investor had pulled out.
Marcus needed money quickly to keep his stake.
He transferred funds into the project through several entities.
Rachel had questioned the speed.
Marcus said family funds were available.
"Did you approve transfers?"
"No."
"Prepare them?"
"I prepared projections. Not bank instructions."
"Who had bank access?"
"Marcus."
"Anyone else?"
"His controller."
"Name?"
Rachel provided it.
Another witness.
Another piece.
Then Rachel looked at Valeria.
"There is something else."
Valeria waited.
"Marcus said the project would fix everything."
"What does that mean?"
"He said once Briar House closed, he wouldn't need Arthur's money."
Valeria almost corrected her.
My money.
The trust's money.
Then Rachel continued.
"He said he'd finally be the one people had to come to."
Class.
Status.
Control.
Not simple greed.
Something uglier because it had history.
"What did he say about me?"
Rachel's face changed.
"I don't think you want to know."
"I do."
Rachel reached for her phone.
A saved message.
Marcus had written:
ONCE THE TWINS ARE BORN, ARTHUR WON'T DARE CUT ME OUT. HE'LL LOOK LIKE HE'S PUNISHING HIS GRANDSONS.
Valeria stared.
The twins had been part of Marcus's financial calculation before they were born.
Then Rachel scrolled to the next message.
IF THE DEAL CLOSES, I FILE. IF IT DOESN'T, I WAIT.
Valeria looked at the date.
Three weeks before delivery.
Her marriage had apparently depended on an investment closing.
Rachel whispered, "I'm sorry."
Valeria didn't answer.
She looked at the final attachment Rachel had brought.
A transfer schedule for Briar House.
Beside the first $200,000 transfer was a notation.
V APPROVAL RECEIVED.
Valeria pointed.
"What is that?"
Rachel looked confused.
"Marcus told us you approved the investment."
"I didn't."
Rachel went pale.
"He showed me an email."
Valeria stared.
"What email?"
Rachel opened her archive.
The sender appeared to be Valeria's personal address.
The message said:
Marcus has my approval to proceed with the family allocation discussed. Please move quickly.
Valeria read it twice.
Then a third time.
"I never wrote this."
Rachel looked horrified.
Denise leaned forward.
"Forward me the original with headers."
Rachel did.
Valeria stared at her own name on a message she had never sent.
May you like
Someone had not only used her authorization.
Someone had created her consent.
