Chapter 1 - The Missing Bracelet

“Where is the mother’s matching bracelet?”
Leah locked both wheels of the bassinet before it reached the private elevator.
The newborn remained calm beneath a soft hospital blanket.
Margaret’s hands tightened around the handle.
Behind the glass patient-room door, Claire was awake in bed, tapping urgently to get Leah’s attention.
Margaret raised a closed folder.
“Claire authorized the family transfer.”
Leah kept one hand on the secured bassinet and rotated it slightly toward Claire’s room.
The infant’s identification band matched the color and number on Claire’s wrist.
Margaret wore no matching band.
Claire pressed closer to the glass.
“I never authorized anything!”
The private elevator opened.
Ethan stepped into the corridor and heard his wife’s complete sentence.
Margaret reached toward the bassinet handle.
He calmly placed one hand on the opposite side, keeping it stationary.
“Mom?”
Leah opened only the outer cover of Margaret’s folder.
Blank sample pages.
No signatures.
No patient authorization.
No discharge order.
Ethan looked from the empty documents to his mother.
“Where were you taking my child?”
Margaret’s face turned pale.
“To the family recovery suite.”
“Why?”
“The photographer was waiting.”
Claire stared at her through the glass.
“You were taking my newborn away for pictures?”
Margaret lifted her chin.
“The first family portrait determines how the hospital records the child’s custodial representative.”
Leah went still.
Hospital photographs did not determine custody.

But on the private founders’ floor, a different document did.
And the board vote attached to it began in seventeen minutes.
