Chapter 2 - The Incapacity Papers
The medical team arrived and examined Emily in the salon.
She and the baby appeared stable, but the physician recommended continued observation and no unnecessary stress.
Vanessa immediately repeated the phrase.
“No unnecessary stress.”
Emily looked at her.
“You tried to create it.”
Ethan opened the cream folder.
The document requested temporary control over Emily’s legal and financial decisions if pregnancy complications made her unable to act.
Vanessa had been named emergency representative.
Not Ethan.
Not Emily’s attorney.
Vanessa.
Margaret stared at the page.
“Why would you be appointed?”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Because Ethan has a conflict of interest.”
The explanation sounded responsible until Ethan reached the attached schedule.
If Emily were declared temporarily incapacitated, Vanessa would gain authority over the Ashford Maternal Housing Trust.
The trust owned four apartment buildings, a childcare center and a legal clinic serving pregnant hotel employees, single mothers and low-income families.
Emily chaired its board.
The family wanted to sell the properties to a luxury developer.
Emily had refused.
The vote was scheduled for midnight.
If she missed it, Vanessa could approve the sale.
Ethan looked at his sister.
“You pushed her hours before the deadline.”
“I did not intend for her to be injured.”
“You intended for her to become unavailable.”
Vanessa glanced toward the camera.
“I intended to protect the family from an emotional decision.”
Emily slowly sat upright with Margaret’s support.
“Keeping pregnant workers in their homes is emotional?”
“The land is worth four hundred million dollars.”
“To you.”
“To the family.”
Emily looked at the folder.
“The trust does not belong to the family.”
Vanessa’s expression tightened.
“Our name is on every building.”
“So are the deductions on every employee paycheck.”
The trust had been funded by hotel housekeepers, servers, cooks and laundry workers during a company crisis.
They accepted smaller wages in exchange for permanent housing protections.
The Ashfords later placed their name on the buildings and called them charity.
Then Ethan found a second attachment.
The guardianship petition claimed Emily had already shown dangerous confusion.
