Chapter 1 - The ShoveDaniel shoved Emily before the vows were finished.

One brief open hand against her shoulder.

One low platform.

One shocked breath from two hundred silent guests.

Emily lost her balance and landed on one hip beside the ornate bridal chair. Her bouquet slipped across the polished marble. The edge of her veil caught against the gold carving and tore across her cheek.

Daniel looked down at her.

Not horrified.

Annoyed.

“Don’t make this uglier.”

Behind him, Vanessa stood in a fitted champagne dress with a restrained smile.

Emily had seen that smile before.

At foundation dinners.

Private family weekends.

Every event where Daniel’s mother introduced Vanessa as “one of us” and Emily as “Daniel’s fiancée from Queens.”

Daniel turned away only after Emily was still.

Then he took Vanessa’s hand.

He guided her forward.

And, before the seated guests, helped her into the bridal chair that had been prepared for Emily.

Vanessa smoothed her dress as if she had been waiting all day for the seat.

Daniel’s mother, Evelyn Prescott, rose slightly from the front row.

She clapped twice.

Slowly.

“You were never built for this family.”

Emily pressed one palm against the floor.

Tears fell.

But her expression changed.

For three years, the Prescotts had treated her working-class childhood like a flaw Daniel had generously overlooked.

They mocked her father’s old pickup truck.

Her mother’s small apartment.

The years Emily worked weekends through college.

They never mentioned that her father later built one of America’s largest private infrastructure companies.

To the Prescotts, money earned in one generation was still inferior to money inherited through five.

Emily moved onto one knee.

She did not look at Daniel.

She turned toward the uniformed household manager at the end of the aisle.

“Tell my father the deal is off.”

Mr. Brooks straightened immediately.

He removed one phone from his jacket.

“Yes, Miss Emily.”

Daniel’s face drained pale.

Vanessa stiffened in the bridal chair.

Evelyn froze with her hands still apart.

Because the wedding had never been only a wedding.

And Daniel had just shoved away the one person authorized to keep his family’s empire alive.
