Chapter 8 - The Son

Arthur called Ethan on speaker.

His son answered from a private jet.

The sound of quiet luxury filled the ballroom.

Arthur asked one question.

“Did you authorize the employee-property sale?”

Ethan remained silent.

Victoria looked toward the guests.

“This should be discussed privately.”

Eleanor’s voice hardened.

“You tried to strike me publicly.”

“The truth can remain in the same room.”

Ethan finally answered.

“The buildings are financially inefficient.”

Leah looked toward the retired workers.

The language was familiar.

People became inefficiencies when land became valuable.

Arthur asked:

“Did you use your mother’s electronic signature?”

“I used authority granted to the family office.”

“She never granted it.”

“She was no longer making rational business decisions.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Her own son had decided affordable housing was evidence of decline.

Ethan continued:

“Victoria was supposed to secure the transfer quietly.”

Victoria’s face changed.

“You said Arthur approved it.”

“I said he would understand once the deal closed.”

The betrayal moved through the ballroom.

Victoria had believed she was joining Ethan’s development company as a partner.

The contract showed otherwise.

Her twenty-million-dollar fee would be paid only if Eleanor signed voluntarily.

The moment she raised her hand, she violated the trust clause and lost everything.

Ethan had designed a plan where Victoria absorbed the public blame while he received the properties.

She stared at the phone.

“You used me.”

Eleanor looked at her.

“As you used Leah.”

Silence.

The employee council held its first emergency vote.

The sale was permanently rejected.

Residents received protected leases.

Workers gained permanent seats on the trust board.

Ethan’s company lost all access.

Then the estate archivist found an older deed.

The employee apartments had never belonged to the Harringtons at all.
