Chapter 7 - His Signature
Samuel stared at the authorization.
“I signed a ranch refinancing package.”
Emma looked at the date.
“The water transfer was attached.”
Mason spoke quickly.
“You approved the transaction.”
“I never saw this page.”
“You signed the final packet.”
The words landed heavily.
Mason had deceived him.
But Samuel had still signed.
He had placed a family seal beneath documents affecting dozens of working families without reading them completely.
Emma looked at her father.
“You always told the workers to check every equipment form.”
Samuel lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“But you didn’t check what could take their homes.”
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked around the arena.
“Because an attorney prepared it.”
The explanation sounded weak even to him.
Ranch hands signed injury waivers, loan forms and employment agreements knowing one mistake could destroy their families.
Samuel had signed because wealth allowed him to assume someone else would absorb the risk.
“I failed them,” he said.
Mason tried to use the admission.
“Then this is not my responsibility alone.”
Samuel looked at him.
“No.”
“My carelessness does not reduce your fraud.”
He placed his personal ranch shares into independent review.
He suspended every family distribution until the employee fund was restored.
His mansion, private aircraft and investment horses would be sold before one worker lost a home.
Mason laughed bitterly.
“You think sacrificing luxury makes you noble?”
“No.”
Samuel looked toward the ranch families.
“It makes repayment possible.”
The cooperative canceled the land sale.
Every resident received permanent occupancy protection.
Workers gained elected seats on the ranch board.
