Chapter 8 - THE YEARS SHE COULD NOT REMEMBER.
The medical files from the facility showed Evelyn received repeated treatment for trauma-related memory loss.
She did remember injuries from the rescue mission.
She did not remember consenting to long-term isolation, signing contracts, or meeting Charles.
The facility doctor had written that Evelyn experienced “persistent delusions regarding family conspiracy.”
It was the same language old-money institutions used whenever an inconvenient woman remembered too much.
Charles claimed Evelyn had voluntarily chosen the false identity after becoming unstable.
He produced video clips in which she said she did not want contact with Admiral Harrison.
The recordings appeared convincing.
Then Aaron noticed the clock in the background.
Each statement was recorded shortly after the medical logs showed Evelyn received a sedative.
The videos captured compliance, not consent.
Harrison’s face hardened.
For years, he donated money to the facility believing it treated traumatized service members.
The foundation had used veterans’ care as cover for coercion and identity theft.
Diane argued that public exposure would destroy the program and leave vulnerable officers without treatment.
Evelyn recognized the tactic.
Every time wealthy people faced accountability, they placed innocent patients, workers, or sailors between themselves and consequences.
“The patients do not need your secrecy,” she said. “They need care that cannot be bought by their families.”
The district admiral ordered every resident’s records protected and the facility placed under independent control.
Charles was detained for questioning.
Diane tried to leave.
Mr. Shaw stopped her with a ledger from the foundation archive.
It listed payments to the doctors who managed Evelyn’s treatment.
One payment came from Admiral Harrison’s personal account.
He looked stunned.
The authorization was genuine.
He remembered approving an annual confidential medical fund after being told it supported a surviving sailor from Evelyn’s lost ship.
He had unknowingly financed his own daughter’s confinement.
Evelyn stared at him.
Harrison did not defend himself.
“I signed because they told me secrecy protected you.”
She answered, “Secrecy protected them.”
Then the investigator opened the final section of the evidence case.
It contained a recent photograph of Evelyn’s supposedly deceased mother.
