Chapter 1: You Did This To Her

Emily screamed before anyone understood she was falling.

“Help me!”

One second, she was standing near the top of the courthouse steps with one hand over her eight-month pregnant belly.

The next, she was sliding down the broad marble stairs.

Her cream dress twisted around her legs.

Her dark hair flew across her face.

Her hand never left her stomach.

At the top of the staircase, Vanessa stood frozen.

Black tailored suit.

Perfect hair.

One hand slowly rising toward her mouth.

Too late.

Everyone had seen how close she was.

Emily reached the bottom of the stairs and went still.

Not completely.

She was breathing.

Weakly.

But she did not get up.

Daniel came running from the courthouse entrance.

“Emily!”

His voice broke across the stone courtyard.

He dropped to his knees beside her.

One hand supported her head.

The other shook as it hovered near her shoulder.

“Emily, stay with me.”

Her eyes opened slightly.

“Look at me.”

She tried.

For one second, she found him.

Daniel saw fear in her eyes.

Not confusion.

Not panic.

Recognition.

Then Emily whispered one word.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel froze.

His face changed.

Slowly, he looked up the staircase.

Vanessa still stood near the courthouse doors.

Several witnesses were behind her.

No one spoke.

Daniel stared directly at her.

Fear became rage.

Controlled.

Cold.

“You did this to her.”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“No.”

Daniel stood.

Not fully.

Just enough to put himself between Emily and the stairs.

Vanessa shook her head.

“She lost her balance.”

A woman near the entrance looked away.

Wrong move.

Daniel saw it.

So did everyone else.

That was the first crack.

Daniel pointed toward the witness.

“You saw something.”

The woman said nothing.

Vanessa snapped,

“She saw Emily fall.”

Daniel looked back at Vanessa.

“I didn’t ask you.”

Silence.

Below them, Emily moved.

Barely.

Daniel immediately returned to her side.

“Stay with me.”

Her breathing was fast.

One hand still protected her belly.

Daniel looked at the courthouse doors.

“Call an ambulance!”

Several people reached for their phones.

Vanessa did not.

That was the second crack.

Daniel noticed.

“You’re standing there.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“What do you want me to do?”

He stared at her.

“My wife is eight months pregnant.”

His voice shook.

“And you’re asking what to do?”

Vanessa looked around.

Too many witnesses.

Too many eyes.

For the first time, she looked less shocked by what had happened than frightened by who had seen it.

Emily’s lips moved.

Daniel leaned closer.

“What?”

Her voice was weak.

“The hearing.”

Daniel frowned.

“What about it?”

Emily tried to breathe.

“She couldn’t let me testify.”

The courtyard went silent.

Daniel slowly turned his head toward Vanessa.

Her face changed.

That was the third crack.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

Daniel looked back at Emily.

“What were you going to testify about?”

Vanessa spoke before Emily could answer.

“She’s confused.”

There it was.

The word people use when a woman says the wrong truth at the wrong time.

Confused.

Emily closed her eyes.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“She said six words.”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“She’s in shock.”

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“And yet you already know which part you want everyone to doubt.”

No one moved.

The witnesses near the courthouse doors began looking at Vanessa differently.

Emily opened her eyes again.

“Daniel.”

He leaned close.

“I’m here.”

She whispered,

“My bag.”

Daniel looked around.

A cream leather handbag lay halfway up the staircase.

One of the witnesses bent down to pick it up.

Vanessa moved first.

Too fast.

“Leave it.”

The entire staircase went still.

That was the fourth crack.

Daniel stood.

“Why?”

Vanessa froze.

The witness holding the handbag looked from her to Daniel.

Vanessa tried to recover.

“She needs medical help, not her purse.”

Daniel stared at her.

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“You need that bag left alone.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Too late.

Daniel walked up three steps.

“Bring it to me.”

The witness did.

Vanessa stepped backward.

One step.

Enough.

Daniel returned to Emily and opened the bag.

Inside were ordinary things.

Wallet.

Keys.

Phone.

A courthouse visitor badge.

And a sealed brown envelope.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Daniel saw it.

He picked up the envelope.

Emily’s name was written across the front.

Below it were four words.

For the judge only.

The courtyard changed before anyone understood why.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“What is this?”

Her eyes filled.

“The reason I came today.”

Vanessa said sharply,

“That is privileged material.”

Daniel turned toward her.

“How do you know what it is?”

Silence.

That was the fifth crack.

Vanessa realized it too late.

Daniel looked at the envelope again.

The seal was broken.

Not torn open completely.

Just lifted and pressed back down.

Carefully.

Someone had already looked inside.

Emily saw it.

Her face changed.

“No.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“What?”

“I sealed that this morning.”

Vanessa stepped back again.

The woman near the courthouse doors whispered,

“Oh my God.”

Daniel looked up.

“Who touched her bag?”

No one answered.

Not yet.

Then an older man in a gray suit raised his hand.

“I saw someone carrying it before the hearing.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

Daniel stood.

“Who?”

The man looked at Vanessa.

Then toward the black luxury car parked near the curb.

“A woman in black.”

No one breathed.

Vanessa snapped,

“That could be anyone.”

The witness shook his head.

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“It was you.”

The courtyard went dead silent.

Vanessa looked around.

There was nowhere left to hide.

Daniel held the envelope tighter.

“You opened this.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“You knew it was evidence.”

“No.”

“You knew Emily was going to testify.”

“Daniel—”

“And you were standing behind her when she fell.”

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

For one second.

Then she recovered.

“I never touched her.”

Daniel stared at her.

That was not the question he had asked.

Below them, Emily whispered,

“Open it.”

Daniel looked down.

Her eyes were barely open.

But her voice was clear.

“Open the envelope.”

He broke the seal.

Inside were three documents.

A photograph.

A financial statement.

And a signed affidavit.

Daniel read the first page.

Then stopped.

His face changed completely.

Emily watched him.

“What?”

He looked at Vanessa.

No anger now.

Something worse.

Disbelief.

The affidavit accused Vanessa of hiding money through a private company.

But that was not what broke Daniel.

At the bottom of the page was a second name.

His own.

Daniel stared at it.

His signature appeared beside Vanessa’s.

He looked at Emily.

“I never signed this.”

Emily whispered,

“I know.”

Vanessa went still.

Daniel turned slowly toward her.

“What did you do?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Then Daniel noticed one more thing inside the envelope.

A courthouse security still.

Timestamped twelve minutes before Emily fell.

The image showed Vanessa standing behind Emily near the upper landing.

And between them was another person.

A man.

Half hidden.

Watching.

Daniel stared at the photo.

Because he knew that man.

He had trusted him for ten years.

And according to the affidavit, that man had helped Vanessa move the money.

Daniel looked toward the courthouse doors.

The man was still standing there.

May you like

Watching everything.

And smiling.
