Chapter 1

That line changed the room.
Because now she was no longer just a pregnant waitress in a worn apron.
She was the first person that night willing to say no out loud.
Bruno shoved his chair back so violently it scraped across the marble-look floor.
He stood up red-faced, humiliated, and for one dangerous second the whole diner seemed to tilt toward him.
Rex backed away.
Not because he had become decent.
Because cowards always step back when the joke stops being funny.
Mia took one careful step backward.
Only one.
And that was when something slipped from her apron pocket.
A silver bracelet hit the floor near her shoe.
Small.
Old.
Heavy enough to make a real sound when it landed.
Everyone heard it.

Mr. Cole stared at the bracelet from behind the counter, and all the color drained from his face.
Mia didn’t notice at first.
She was still watching Bruno.
Still bracing herself.
Still standing between danger and the life inside her.
Bruno started to lean toward her, fury rising in his face.
Then Mr. Cole came rushing out from behind the counter.
Not slow.
Not cautious.
Urgent.
Terrified.
“Stop!” he shouted.
Bruno paused.
Rex turned.
Mia looked down at the bracelet, confused.
Mr. Cole’s eyes were locked on the tiny engraved crest in the silver.
His voice broke when he looked up at Bruno.
“Do you know who she is?”
And just like that, the diner changed again.
Bruno stopped moving.
Rex went still.
Mia stood there with one hand over her belly and the other hanging at her side, staring at the bracelet like it had just betrayed a secret she didn’t know she was carrying.
Mr. Cole did not take his eyes off it.
The whole diner waited.

Because whatever name was about to come out next…
was big enough to stop a man like Bruno in mid-step.
