Chapter 7 - Enough. Step Back. For one terrible second, Isabella forgot how to breathe.

Ethan stood between her and Margaret like Isabella was the danger.

Like she was the one who needed to be controlled.

His hand remained around his mother's arm.

Protective.

Instinctive.

Public.

“Step back?” Isabella repeated.

Ethan's eyes were conflicted.

“Please don't make this worse.”

That was the moment the humiliation became unbearable.

Not because he shouted.

He didn't.

Not because he insulted her.

He never used one cruel word.

He did something far more painful.

He treated her grief like a disruption.

Isabella looked around the ballroom.

Two hundred witnesses.

Her enormous white gown.

Her veil spread across the mirrored aisle.

The chandeliers.

The candles.

The flowers.

Everything had been designed to make her look like a princess.

Yet she had never felt poorer.

Not poor in money.

Poor in power.

In that room, Margaret could admit she signed documents connected to the ruin of Isabella's family, and people still waited to see whether Isabella would be criticized for reacting too emotionally.

That was how class worked when polished enough.

The wealthy did not need to silence you themselves.

The room did it for them.

“You told me you would choose me,” Isabella said.

Ethan's face tightened.

“This isn't about choosing sides.”

“It became about sides when you stepped between us.”

Margaret whispered, “Please stop.”

Isabella looked at her.

“No. You don't get to ask for peace after buying it with someone else's silence.”

Margaret's body trembled.

Then Ethan did something Isabella would remember long after the chandeliers went dark.

He pulled his mother into his arms.

Margaret collapsed against his chest, still clutching the red roses.

Several guests visibly softened toward her.

Toward Margaret.

The billionaire widow.

The woman who had signed the papers.

No one crossed the aisle toward Isabella.

No one asked whether she needed a chair.

No one said her father's name.

Her tears fell silently now.

One down each cheek.

Ethan held Margaret as if protecting her from the bride he had promised to love.

And Isabella understood the deepest cruelty of that room.

Margaret's pain was allowed to be complicated.

Isabella's pain was merely inconvenient.

Then Margaret slowly raised her face from Ethan's chest.

Her eyes were red.

Her breathing uneven.

She looked at him and said clearly:

“I only wanted to protect you.”

Ethan went completely still.

Isabella did too.

Because there was something in Margaret's voice that changed everything.

She was not speaking about the wedding.

She was not speaking about the argument.

And suddenly Isabella was no longer certain which one of them Margaret had been trying to protect.

May you like

Then Margaret said six words that made Ethan release her.

“Your father made me sign it.”
