Chapter 8 - I Only Wanted to Protect YouEthan stared at his mother.

“What did Dad make you sign?”
Margaret looked toward Isabella.
Then toward the hundreds of guests who had spent years admiring the Vale name.
For the first time, fear disappeared from her face.
Only shame remained.
“Redmere Holdings wasn't mine,” Margaret said. “Not really.”
Isabella's jaw tightened.
“Your signature is on the agreement.”
“I know.”
“Then don't hide behind a dead man.”
Margaret accepted the accusation without defending herself.
“I won't.”
The room became so quiet that the soft fabric of Isabella's veil moving across the marble could be heard.
Margaret continued.
“Your father wasn't ruined because he was irresponsible, Isabella. The Vale corporation canceled his distribution contract, then purchased part of the debt through an intermediary. When he could no longer refinance, Redmere acquired the building.”
Ethan stepped back.
“No.”
Margaret's face broke.
“Yes.”
Isabella felt dizzy.
Her father had not simply lost.
He had been cornered.
A small business owner against people with attorneys, shell companies, private bankers, and enough money to make cruelty look like ordinary business.
“Why?” Isabella asked.
Margaret looked at Ethan.
“Because his property was necessary for a larger development.”
The answer was so simple it was monstrous.
A man had lost everything because richer men wanted the block beneath his feet.
Ethan shook his head.
“My father wouldn't do that.”
Margaret reached into the folds of the black ribbon wrapped around the roses.
She removed the sealed ivory envelope.
“He confessed before he died.”
Ethan stared at it.
The old blue handwriting was visible from where Isabella stood.
For the person we wronged.
Margaret held it with both hands.
“I kept this because I thought exposing him would destroy you. The board. The foundation. Everything carrying our name.”
Isabella's eyes filled again.
“So you protected a dynasty.”
Margaret looked at her.
“No.”
Her answer was immediate.
“I protected my son.”
“And who protected my father?”
Margaret had no answer.
That silence belonged to Isabella.
For once, the balance of power shifted.
Several guests lowered their eyes.
Others looked toward Ethan.
The sympathy that had automatically gone to Margaret now hung uncertainly in the room.
Ethan looked from the envelope to Isabella.
“Did you know about this before today?”
Isabella almost laughed.
Even now.
Even with the confession visible.
He still searched for some way to make her part of the deception.
“No, Ethan.”
His face changed.
She continued.
“But maybe that's the difference between us. When your family hides something, it's called protection. When I discover it, it's called a scandal.”
He flinched.
Margaret extended the envelope toward Isabella.
She reached for it.
But Ethan caught his mother's wrist.
“Don't.”
One word.
Margaret looked at him.
Isabella did too.

And in that instant she realized Ethan was not only afraid of what his father had done.
He was afraid of what Isabella would become once she could prove it.
