Chapter 3 - THE SON WHO COULD NOT REMEMBER THE CODE.
James denied disabling the camera.
He had spent the previous hour greeting guests beside the mansion entrance.
The security director confirmed that James’s private code had been used from the upstairs study.
Only three people knew it: James, Eleanor, and Vivian.
Vivian immediately accused James’s executive assistant of leaking the number.
The explanation protected her while placing suspicion on another employee.
It was the Whitmore family’s oldest habit.
When something went wrong, responsibility traveled downward.
Executives made difficult decisions.
Servants made mistakes.
Poor people had motives.
Rich people had explanations.
The ambulance team stabilized Eleanor and prepared to transport her to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Before they moved her, Maria noticed a pale stain on the silver medicine case.
It smelled faintly of almond extract.
The family physician warned everyone not to speculate.
Vivian said the caregiver was trying to distract from the prescription bottle in her bag.
James asked where the hidden phone came from.
No one admitted owning it.
The incoming message had been sent from a prepaid number.
The phone contained no contacts, but its photo gallery held pictures of Eleanor’s medication schedule, the staircase camera panel, and a sealed trust document on the desk in the upstairs study.
James recognized the document.
His mother planned to announce a major change to the Whitmore Family Trust during the celebration.
Vivian claimed she knew nothing about it.
Maria did.
Eleanor had asked her to witness the signing because she wanted someone present who did not benefit from the decision.
The revised trust would transfer the lakeside mansion and a large housing portfolio into an independent community foundation.
The buildings would no longer be converted into luxury condominiums.
Current tenants would receive ownership shares.
Vivian’s inheritance would shrink by hundreds of millions of dollars.
Several guests suddenly understood why she had been standing near Eleanor before the collapse.
Vivian called the plan irrational.
She said her mother-in-law had been manipulated by tenants, activists, and hired caregivers who did not understand old-money responsibility.
Maria replied, “They understand rent.”
James opened the hidden phone’s deleted-message folder.
One message remained partially recoverable.
It had been sent to Vivian that morning.
“Make Eleanor look confused before she signs.”
