Chapter 6 - THE VIDEO JAMES COULD NOT DENY.
The recording showed James arguing with Eleanor three hours before the celebration.
He asked her to delay the trust amendment for thirty days.
He warned that removing the properties could trigger loan defaults and place thousands of Whitmore employees at risk.
Eleanor accused him of using workers as an excuse to protect investors.
James said he needed time.
Then Jonathan entered and offered a compromise.
Eleanor would sign a medical proxy naming Vivian as temporary decision-maker.
In return, Jonathan would restructure the loans.
James refused.
He told Jonathan never to place another document in front of his mother.
That part of the video supported him.
Then the footage jumped forward.
James stood alone with Vivian after Eleanor left the study.
His voice was low.
“Do whatever it takes to stop the signing tonight.”
The sentence devastated him.
He remembered saying it.
But he insisted he meant legal action, not physical harm.
Vivian had asked whether she should call the foundation attorney.
James told her to file an emergency injunction if necessary.
The video cut off before that explanation.
Someone had edited the recording to preserve the most damaging sentence.
Eleanor tried to speak from the hospital bed.
Only one word came clearly.
“Original.”
The original video was stored on the mansion’s internal server.
The security director said it had been deleted remotely.
Maria used trustee authority to order an outside forensic team to recover it.
Vivian protested that family servers contained private financial information.
Maria refused to protect secrecy at the cost of truth.
The restored footage showed James finishing his sentence:
“Do whatever it takes legally to stop the signing tonight—but do not frighten her.”
James closed his eyes.
He was not guilty of ordering Eleanor harmed.
But his willingness to stop the amendment had given Vivian and Jonathan an opening.
He had valued the company more than his mother’s decision until the consequences became personal.
Eleanor wrote another message.
“James knew about the medicine.”
He stared at her.
The family physician opened the medication chart.
