Chapter 1 - THE CAKE HIT HER FIRST.

The cake hit Lily before Grace understood what she was seeing.

One second, her seven-year-old daughter was standing beside a linen-covered dessert table in a pink-and-white princess dress, staring at the frosting on her fingertips.

The next, Evelyn Carter swung both hands forward and drove the little birthday cake straight into the child's head.

The room made one sound.

A sharp, collective gasp.

Crystal chandeliers glittered over two hundred formally dressed guests. A jazz trio stopped in the middle of a song. Someone dropped a fork. Beyond the tall arched entrance, an enormous American flag hung above the doorway, perfectly still against the polished stone wall.

Lily stumbled backward.

Frosting covered the side of her hair. Pink icing streaked one cheek. Beneath it, a red mark was already rising on her forehead.

No blood.

That almost made it worse.

Grace moved before anyone else did.

"Lily!"

Her heels slipped once on the polished floor as she crossed the distance and dropped beside her daughter.

Lily clutched the top of her head.

"Mommy!"

Grace pulled her against her chest.

Lily was shaking so hard Grace could feel every breath.

"What happened?"

Before Lily could answer, Evelyn stepped backward.

Her burgundy evening gown didn't have a wrinkle in it. Her silver hair remained perfectly arranged in its high bun. She raised both hands like the victim of some ridiculous misunderstanding.

"Her hand slipped!"

Grace stared at her.

Evelyn stared back.

There was frosting on Evelyn's fingers.

"What?"

"She touched the cake," Evelyn said quickly. "I was trying to move it. Her hand slipped."

Lily turned inside Grace's arms.

"No."

Her voice was tiny.

But the ballroom was silent enough to hear it.

Lily pointed directly at her grandmother.

"Grandma got angry because I accidentally touched her cake."

Grace felt something inside her go very still.

Not hot.

Not wild.

Still.

The kind of stillness that came before a person decided exactly how much humiliation she was willing to swallow.

Evelyn's mouth tightened.

"Lily, don't exaggerate."

The words were almost worse than the cake.

Grace looked down at her daughter.

"Did she hit you with it?"

Lily nodded.

Her lower lip shook.

"I said sorry."

That sentence went through Grace like a nail.

She looked around the room.

Nobody was moving.

Some guests were staring at the floor.

Some were staring at Evelyn.

A waiter near the bar had one hand over his mouth.

Then Daniel stepped out from behind a cluster of relatives.

Grace's husband.

Lily's father.

For half a second, Grace believed he was finally coming toward his daughter.

Instead, he pointed at Grace.

"Stop humiliating my mother right now."

Grace stared at him.

She genuinely thought she had misheard.

"Your daughter is crying."

"I saw what happened."

"Then why are you talking to me?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

That familiar tone.

The one he used when he wanted Grace to understand that she was becoming inconvenient.

"Because you're making a scene."

Grace slowly rose.

Lily clung to her dress.

"A scene?"

"Mom said it was an accident."

Lily cried harder.

"It wasn't!"

Daniel glanced at his daughter, then back at Grace.

"She's seven. She's upset."

Grace saw Evelyn watching from behind him.

Not ashamed.

Not frightened.

Watching.

Waiting for her son to finish the job.

Daniel pointed again.

"Stop humiliating my mother right now."

Grace slapped him.

One strike.

Open palm.

Hard enough to turn his face and make him stagger half a step.

The room exploded with whispers.

Daniel touched his cheek.

Grace didn't give herself time to think about what she had just done.

A wine glass sat on the nearest table.

She grabbed it.

Evelyn saw the movement too late.

Grace threw the entire glass of red wine into her face.

Wine ran over Evelyn's forehead, nose, and expensive burgundy gown.

"How dare you!"

Grace moved in front of Lily.

"No. How dare you."

Evelyn wiped wine from her eyes.

"You assaulted me!"

Grace almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because the sentence was so absurd she couldn't find another reaction.

Behind them, Lily was still crying.

The red mark on her forehead had darkened.

Grace turned.

That was when she saw the police officer coming through the main doorway.

He had been assigned to event security.

His gaze went from Grace, to Daniel, to Lily, then directly to Evelyn.

"What happened?"

Grace lifted Lily into her arms.

Her daughter wrapped both arms around her neck.

Grace pointed.

"She attacked my daughter."

Evelyn spoke immediately.

"This woman is hysterical."

The officer didn't look at her.

He looked at Lily.

"Sweetheart, are you hurt?"

Lily pressed her face into Grace's shoulder.

Grace felt her nod.

The officer stepped toward Evelyn.

"Ma'am, I need you to stay right here."

Evelyn tried to move away.

"Do you know who I am?"

The officer caught her arm.

Daniel finally moved.

"Officer, hold on. This is a family matter."

The officer looked at him.

"A child was injured. It stopped being a family matter."

The words shut Daniel up.

Grace heard the click of metal.

Evelyn looked down.

The officer had placed one cuff around her wrist.

That was when Evelyn's expression finally changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Grace carried Lily toward the doorway.

Daniel called after her.

"Grace."

She kept walking.

"Grace, wait."

She stopped beneath the American flag but didn't turn around.

Daniel's voice softened.

"Where are you going?"

Grace looked at Lily's frosting-covered hair.

At the bruise forming beneath it.

At the little fingers gripping the back of her dress.

Then she looked over her shoulder.

"Away from the people who think she needs to apologize for being hurt."

Daniel's face went pale.

Grace walked outside.

The night air hit her like cold water.

She had made it halfway across the parking lot when the reception-hall manager came running through the doors.

"Mrs. Carter!"

Grace turned.

The manager looked nervous.

He glanced back toward the ballroom before speaking.

"You need to know something."

Grace tightened her hold on Lily.

"What?"

He swallowed.

"Every angle of that dessert table is covered by security cameras."

Grace stared at him.

May you like

The manager lowered his voice.

"And one of them has audio."
