Chapter 10 - THE SECOND VIDEO SHOWED WHAT HE CHOSE NOT TO SEE.

The guest's name was Amanda Ruiz.

Grace remembered her vaguely from the wedding.

Friend of the bride.

Dark green dress.

Pregnant.

She had spent most of dinner sitting near the aisle with her shoes off beneath the table.

Amanda sent the video through a secure file link.

Grace didn't play it immediately.

She waited until Lily was asleep.

Then she called Rebecca.

"Should I watch this?"

Rebecca laughed softly.

"You're asking a lawyer for permission to watch a video sent to your own phone?"

"I've become cautious."

"Good. Save the original. Don't edit it. Don't post it. Then watch."

Grace downloaded the file.

The video began thirty-one seconds before Evelyn lifted the cake.

Amanda had clearly been recording Lily.

The frame followed her princess dress as she approached the dessert table.

In the background, Daniel stood near Claire.

Claire leaned toward him.

The audio was messy, but audible.

"Your mom is doing it again."

Daniel: "Doing what?"

"Look."

Daniel looked.

Evelyn pointed at Lily.

Lily backed away.

Claire said, "Go get her."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Not here."

Claire: "Daniel."

He shook his head.

"She'll calm down."

Then he turned toward the bar.

Grace paused the video.

She stared at the frozen frame.

Not here.

Two words.

Daniel had not been unaware.

He had been making a social calculation.

Grace understood why that hurt more than ignorance.

He saw Lily's discomfort.

He saw Evelyn's anger.

He was worried about a scene.

So he chose the room over the child.

Grace continued playing.

Lily touched the cake.

Evelyn's voice rose.

Amanda's camera shifted toward them.

Grace heard the now-familiar sentence.

"If you damage it, your mother couldn't afford to replace it."

Then another line the security recording hadn't captured clearly.

Lily whispered, "Mommy can buy cake."

Evelyn laughed.

"Sweetheart, that's not the point."

The way she said sweetheart made Grace's skin crawl.

Then Evelyn leaned closer.

"This table is not for you."

Lily's small hand dropped.

The cake hit three seconds later.

Grace stopped the video.

She couldn't watch the rest yet.

She walked into the bathroom and ran cold water over her wrists.

Nothing about the additional video changed the central fact.

Evelyn hit Lily with the cake.

Daniel didn't.

But the video clarified Daniel's role.

He had known enough to intervene.

He had chosen not to.

Grace called him the next morning.

"I have Amanda's video."

Silence.

"Who?"

"Claire's friend."

Another pause.

"You need to stop collecting videos like you're building some documentary."

Grace almost laughed.

"You are visible."

"I know."

"You said, 'Not here.'"

Daniel exhaled.

"Grace."

"What did you mean?"

"I didn't want Mom causing a scene at Claire's wedding."

"And Lily?"

"I thought Mom would settle down."

"Based on what?"

"I don't know."

"Did you see Lily backing away?"

"Yes."

"Did you hear your mother insult me?"

"Some of it."

Grace gripped the phone.

"Did you hear her tell Lily the table wasn't for her?"

"No."

That might be true.

Grace didn't push what she couldn't prove.

"You knew enough."

"I know."

The admission stopped her.

Daniel continued.

"I know."

Grace sat down.

"I kept thinking if I didn't react, Mom would stop."

"Does that usually work?"

"No."

"Then why did you keep doing it?"

Daniel's voice broke.

"Because when I reacted, she made it worse."

Grace stared at the hotel wall.

There was something in that sentence.

Not an excuse.

A history.

"What does that mean?"

"Growing up."

"Daniel."

"I'm not trying to make this about me."

"Then don't."

Silence.

He said, "Mom wins arguments by making them expensive."

Grace frowned.

"Explain."

"If you disagree, suddenly something becomes a problem. A vacation. A car. Tuition. A house repair. She never says, 'Agree with me or lose money.'"

Grace waited.

"She just makes you remember where the money came from."

Grace thought about the handwritten note.

We are not an ATM.

"Did she do that to us?"

Daniel didn't answer.

"Daniel."

"Sometimes."

"How?"

"She offered to pay for the kitchen. Then when you didn't want to attend that charity dinner, she asked me why she was helping people who didn't value the family."

Grace closed her eyes.

She remembered the dinner.

She had gone.

Lily had been sick.

Grace left after forty minutes.

Evelyn didn't speak to her for a week.

At the time, Daniel said his mother was tired.

Now the memory looked different.

"Anything else?"

"Yes."

Grace waited.

Daniel's voice dropped.

"She complained when we put Lily in public school."

Grace frowned.

"She wanted private."

"I know."

"She offered to pay."

"I know that too."

"No. You don't."

Grace went still.

"What don't I know?"

Daniel hesitated.

"She told me she'd cover tuition if we let her choose the school."

Grace stood.

"What?"

"I said no."

"When?"

"Two years ago."

"You never told me."

"I didn't want you feeling like everything was a negotiation."

Grace laughed bitterly.

"It was a negotiation. You just hid the terms."

"I said no."

"Good."

"Does that count for nothing?"

Grace stopped.

That question mattered.

Daniel had failed Lily at the wedding.

He had also apparently resisted Evelyn at other times.

People didn't fit cleanly into categories.

"No," Grace said. "It doesn't count for nothing."

Daniel breathed.

"But it doesn't erase the wedding either."

"I know."

That afternoon, Grace met Rebecca with the guest video.

Rebecca watched it twice.

"This is useful."

"For what?"

"It corroborates the timeline."

"Does it prove Evelyn intended to hurt Lily?"

"It proves deliberate physical movement better than motive."

Grace nodded.

She had learned the language now.

Proves what happened.

Not what lived in someone's mind.

Rebecca paused on Daniel walking toward the bar.

"This also complicates your marriage."

"That's not a legal opinion."

"No. That's free."

Grace almost smiled.

Then Rebecca pointed to the timestamp.

"Look."

Grace leaned closer.

"What?"

"There are two recording sources. Security and guest video."

"Yes."

"Camera Three starts later."

Grace looked.

The security file began at 8:41:17.

Amanda's video began at 8:40:46.

Thirty-one seconds earlier.

Rebecca frowned.

"Didn't the venue say that security camera records continuously?"

"Yes."

"Then why does the exported clip begin here?"

Grace sat upright.

"Maybe that's just where they cut it."

"Probably."

"Probably?"

Rebecca tapped the screen.

"Ask for the untrimmed original."

Grace emailed the venue.

The manager replied an hour later.

We preserved all available footage and provided the relevant segment requested by police.

Grace wrote back.

Please preserve the full recording for that camera, not only the exported segment.

No response.

By evening, the officer called.

"Mrs. Carter, did you ask the venue for the original Camera Three file?"

"Yes."

"Good."

"Why?"

He hesitated.

"Because the security technician says there may be a gap."

Grace stood.

"What kind of gap?"

"Eighteen seconds."

"Before the cake?"

"About two minutes before."

"Is that important?"

"Don't know yet."

"Was it deleted?"

"We don't know."

Grace closed her eyes.

Fact.

Suspicion.

Interpretation.

She forced herself not to jump.

"Could it be technical?"

"Yes."

"Could someone have edited it?"

"Possible."

"Do you know?"

"No."

Grace nodded to herself.

"Then that's what we know."

The officer sounded almost amused.

"You're getting good at this."

"I hate that."

He continued.

"The main incident is still clearly captured. The gap doesn't change that."

"Then why mention it?"

"Because someone exported that camera's footage before police requested it."

Grace went still.

"When?"

"We're checking."

"Who?"

"We're checking."

Grace looked at Lily asleep across the room.

The officer's voice dropped.

"Don't build a theory yet."

"I won't."

But when Grace hung up, she stared at the frozen security timestamp.

Somebody had accessed the footage early.

Before the police evidence request.

Maybe a manager.

Maybe a technician.

Maybe someone doing routine work.

Or maybe someone already knew that what happened near the dessert table mattered.

Grace opened the file properties.

One line sat at the bottom.

EXPORT CREATED: 8:39 P.M.

Grace checked Amanda's video.

May you like

The cake struck Lily at 8:42.

The security clip had been exported three minutes before it happened.
