Chapter 1

Evelyn Harper slapped Grace Collins so hard the loyal maid took one broken step beside the marble coffee table.
The empty jewelry box sat open between them like a trap.
Little Lily clutched Grace’s apron with both hands, shaking in her pajamas.
No one moved.
That was the cruelest part.
In that mansion, a rich woman’s accusation was treated like proof.
Evelyn pointed at Grace with pearl-covered fingers and snapped, “You stole from us!”
Grace raised one trembling hand to her cheek.
Her eyes were wet, but she did not scream.
She knew what they would call it if she did.
Hysterical.
Ungrateful.
A servant making a scene.
Lily cried silently against her apron, too scared to speak.
And somehow, Evelyn looked more offended by the child’s fear than by her own cruelty.
Grace covered Lily’s little hands gently.
“I would never hurt this family.”
But Daniel Harper had already risen behind the armchair.
Too fast.
Too nervous.
Too eager to watch someone else take the blame.
Arthur Brooks, the old butler, stood near the hallway without saying a word.
But his eyes were not on Grace.
They were on Daniel’s wrist.
A pale watch mark flashed under Daniel’s sleeve.
Fresh.
Bare.
Hidden too late.
Then Arthur looked toward the baby monitor near the staircase.
Its green light had been blinking from the beginning.
Daniel saw Arthur notice.
And for one second, guilt passed across his face before fear swallowed it.
That was the first crack.
Evelyn stepped closer to Grace like a queen sentencing a beggar.
“This family gave you a roof,” she said coldly.
“We gave you trust.”
“You repaid us with theft.”
