Chapter 2

Grace lowered her eyes, not because she was guilty.
Because humiliation is heavier when a child is watching.
Lily reached higher, gripping the apron tighter, as if holding Grace could keep the whole room from breaking.
Daniel rubbed his wrist and looked away.
“Just get her out,” he said.
His voice was sharp.
Too sharp.
Like a man terrified that silence might start talking.
Evelyn gently but firmly removed Lily’s hands from Grace’s apron.
The child’s face crumpled.
She reached for Grace again immediately.
But Grace did not grab her back.
She knew Evelyn was waiting for one wrong movement.
One excuse to call love defiance.
One excuse to turn tenderness into guilt.
“Leave,” Evelyn ordered.
“No excuses.”
Grace took one slow step backward toward the front door.
Her cheek burned.
Her heart broke.
But she still looked more innocent than everyone accusing her.
And that was what finally made Arthur move.
His gloved hand slipped into his jacket pocket.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
Not much.
Just enough.
Arthur removed the baby monitor remote.
Evelyn froze.
Grace stopped breathing.
Daniel whispered nothing, but his face begged the room not to look.
Arthur pressed playback.
The monitor beeped.
The small screen lit up.
A blurred recording appeared.
A man crossing the living room.
A man opening the jewelry box.
A man removing the watch from his wrist before reaching inside.
The room went silent in a different way.
Not cruel now.
Afraid.
Daniel turned slowly toward the monitor.
All the color left his face.
Evelyn looked from the screen to her son, and for the first time, her pride had nowhere to stand.
Arthur lifted his calm eyes directly to Daniel.
“I saw everything.”
Grace stood by the doorway with one hand on her cheek.
Lily broke free and ran back to her apron.
This time, no one stopped her.
The woman they had slapped was innocent.
The child had known it.
The butler had recorded it.
And the real thief had been standing in cashmere, begging them to throw the maid out before the truth came home.
