Chapter 9 - Her Mother
Claire’s mother, Evelyn Whitmore, had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
The policy file carried her verified trust seal.
Samuel examined the digital record.
The seal had been used six days ago.
“That is impossible,” Claire whispered.
Vanessa reached into her silver clutch and removed a second envelope.
Adrian tried to stop her.
Claire stepped between them.
“Open it.”
Inside was a letter written in Evelyn’s distinctive handwriting.
It instructed Vanessa to place the insurance agreement where Claire would find it if Adrian attempted to activate the proxy.
Vanessa began crying.
“I was supposed to expose him.”
Claire stared at her.
“You switched the glass.”
“I was told the drink would only create a public concern.”
Grace’s voice hardened.
“You risked her safety because a rich woman promised you control.”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“She said the policy had to be revealed in front of investors.”
Adrian laughed bitterly.
“So this was a trap for me?”
Samuel shook his head.
The insurance policy was real.
The premiums were real.
The two-hundred-million-dollar benefit was real.
But the beneficiary clause had changed forty-eight hours earlier.
Adrian and Vanessa would receive nothing.
The payout would transfer directly into the employee retirement reserve.
Someone had used Adrian’s own scheme to restore the money he stole.
Claire looked toward her father.
“Is my mother alive?”
Charles’s face gave her the answer.
He had known.
For twelve years, he allowed Claire to grieve while Evelyn operated through hidden trusts.
Then Samuel found the address where the latest amendment had been signed.
