Chapter 6 - The Hidden Office
The private office belonged to Margaret Bellweather, Adrian’s mother and chair of the hotel foundation.
She entered the ballroom in a silver gown after being summoned by the trustee.
Adrian looked relieved.
Claire did not.
Margaret had encouraged the engagement.
She praised Claire’s intelligence at donor dinners and called her difficult in family meetings.
When Claire questioned the Bellweather Reserve, Margaret advised Adrian to protect her from unnecessary stress.
Margaret examined the forged signature and blamed the technology vendor.
Mason placed another file beside it.
“The vendor reported directly to your office.”
She looked at him.
“You were dismissed for insubordination.”
“I was dismissed after I found your access code on fourteen transfers.”
Margaret’s expression did not change.
She had spent forty years learning how wealthy people survived accusations.
Never rush.
Never raise your voice.
Make the accuser appear emotional.
“Mr. Mason resented reporting to younger leadership,” she said.
Mason’s mother had worked as a Bellweather housekeeper.
She contributed to the reserve until arthritis forced her retirement.
Her request for home assistance was denied.
Margaret’s office approved a marble renovation to the executive lobby that same month.
Mason looked at her.
“This was never about my age.”
“It was about your belief that my mother’s money became yours after deduction.”
Margaret turned toward Claire.
“You brought a dismissed security employee into a family gala.”
“No.”
Claire looked at Mason.
“I sent him the account statement because he was the only investigator Adrian could not control.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
That was the first sign of fear.
The trustee opened her office archive.
It contained prepared statements describing Claire as unstable, Mason as violent and the workers as misinformed.
Each statement had been written before the gala began.
Like the chair Adrian pulled away, the public humiliation had been planned.
Then a final file appeared.
It instructed Adrian to provoke Claire in front of witnesses.
