Chapter 2 - POOR BLOOD

No one spoke after the recording ended.

Vanessa looked toward the police.

Then Margaret.

Then Ethan.

Anywhere except Lily.

That was the first crack.

Ethan kept his daughter in his arms.

Wet clothes.

Wet hair.

No concern for the marble.

No concern for the guests who had once called him one of America’s most controlled billionaires.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Say it again.”

She swallowed.

“What?”

“The part about poor blood.”

Silence.

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“Ethan, emotions are high.”

Wrong move.

He looked at his mother.

“My daughter was frightened in a pool.”

A pause.

“And you want to discuss tone?”

Margaret stopped.

That was the second crack.

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You are twisting private frustration into something ugly.”

Eleanor pressed another button.

The recorder answered.

Vanessa’s voice:

“Her mother came into this house carrying trays.”

A pause.

“Lily should remember where she comes from.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Claire.

His late wife.

The woman he had loved.

The daughter of a waitress and a mechanic.

The woman Margaret never introduced as “Claire Hale” at old-money events.

Only:

Ethan’s wife.

As if her name itself lowered the room.

Lily lifted her head.

“Was Mommy poor?”

Ethan’s face broke.

Children should not have to ask whether poverty makes them shameful.

He looked at her.

“Your mother worked hard.”

A pause.

“She was kind.”

Another pause.

“And she was better than people who needed money to feel important.”

Vanessa flinched.

Good.

That landed.

That was the third crack.

Margaret whispered:

“Claire was never suited for this life.”

Ethan slowly looked at her.

Lily heard it.

Everyone did.

Margaret realized too late.

Ethan asked:

“Which part?”

Silence.

“The mansion?”

No answer.

“The trust?”

Still nothing.

“Or being my wife?”

Margaret looked away.

That was enough.

Eleanor continued the recording.

Vanessa:

“Once I marry Ethan, Lily will need proper guidance.”

Margaret:

“And Claire’s influence?”

Vanessa laughed.

“She’s dead.”

The room froze.

Lily buried her face against Ethan’s chest.

His expression changed completely.

No shouting.

No chaos.

Worse.

Control.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You discussed replacing my daughter’s mother.”

Vanessa said nothing.

Margaret whispered:

“It wasn’t like that.”

Eleanor turned toward her.

“You were there.”

Silence.

That was the fourth crack.

Then the recording continued.

Margaret’s voice:

“Just make sure Ethan signs before midnight.”

Ethan went still.

“Signs what?”

No one answered.

Then Eleanor reached into her handbag.

And removed a cream envelope.

Already prepared.

Already dated.

Already carrying Ethan’s name.

At the top:

Emergency Parental Fitness Review.
