Chapter 5 - VANESSA BLACKMAILED THE FAMILY WITH CLAIRE’S VOICE

Vanessa did not deny it.
That made it worse.
That was the first crack.
Ethan stared at her.
“You had my wife’s voice.”
Silence.
“For three years.”
Nothing.
“And you used it against my mother.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“I protected myself.”
Ethan almost laughed.
“From a dead woman?”
No answer.
Eleanor placed one old email on the table.
From Vanessa to Margaret.
Keep Ethan away from Claire’s family, or I release the recording.
Another.
Do not let Lily’s grandmother attend the foundation gala.
Another.
Remind Ethan that people like Claire never survive old money without embarrassing everyone around them.
Margaret had obeyed.
Again.
And again.
That was the second crack.
Ethan looked at his mother.
“You excluded Lily’s grandmother because Vanessa told you to.”
Margaret whispered:
“I was protecting Claire’s reputation.”
Ethan stared at her.
“She was dead.”
Silence.
“Whose reputation were you protecting?”
Margaret had no answer.
Good.
Because the answer was herself.
Eleanor asked Vanessa for the recording.
Vanessa refused.
Police could request it later.
But Ethan did not need to wait.
Eleanor had found a backup.
Claire had made one.
Of course she had.
That woman had learned the hard way that rich families often remembered selectively.
The audio played.
Claire’s voice.
Alive.
Calm.
Tired.
“I know what they call me when Ethan leaves the room.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Claire continued.
“Gold digger.”
A pause.
“Waitress.”
Another.
“That girl from Ohio.”
Ethan’s face broke.
He had known there were insults.
He had not known how many.
Claire continued.
“Margaret thinks I married above myself.”
Silence.
“Vanessa thinks Lily should be embarrassed by my family.”
Vanessa went pale.
That was the third crack.
Then came the sentence Vanessa had used as blackmail.
Claire said:
“Sometimes I wish I had never entered this family.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Vanessa looked almost relieved.
There.
Her proof.
Her weapon.
But the recording continued.
Claire’s voice:
“Not because I regret Ethan.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Not because I regret Lily.”
Silence.
“Because I hate what this family makes good people apologize for.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
The room went still.
Claire continued:
“My mother serves food.”
“Margaret serves judgment.”
Eleanor looked down.
Even she almost smiled.
Claire continued:
“I know which woman I’m proud to come from.”
That was the fourth crack.
Vanessa had been blackmailing them with half a recording.
A sentence cut away from its meaning.
Rich people had called Claire ashamed of the family.
She had actually been ashamed of their cruelty.
Then Claire said one final thing.
“If anything happens to me, check the foundation payroll.”
Ethan opened his eyes.
Vanessa stopped breathing.
The foundation payroll.
Nothing to do with the pool.
Nothing to do with Lily.
Or so he thought.
Then Eleanor placed a red folder on the table.
Inside were twenty-seven payments.
All made to one person.
Claire’s mother.
May you like
But she had never received a dollar.
Someone had been stealing money under the name of the poor woman they publicly called a burden.
