Chapter 1 - Then Explain Why She’s on the FloorClaire was already on the marble when Vanessa kicked the table.

The sharp crack of a red stiletto against black metal echoed through the mansion corridor.

The small pedestal table toppled beside Claire and scraped across the black-and-white checkerboard floor.

Claire cried out and curled around her pregnant belly.

One hand protected the life inside her.

The other pressed against the cold marble as she struggled to breathe through humiliation.

Vanessa stood above her in a crimson satin dress.

Perfect hair.

Perfect makeup.

No fear.

Only a small, satisfied smile.

The kind of smile people wore when they believed the person beneath them had no witnesses.

Claire looked up through tears.

“You wanted this.”

Vanessa’s expression remained calm.

“You were always too dramatic.”

Claire’s lips parted.

The cruelty was familiar.

Not because Vanessa had always been cruel.

Because the entire Vale family had spent years using the same language.

Emotional.

Sensitive.

Difficult.

Ungrateful.

Words rich families preferred when a woman from a poorer background noticed she was being humiliated.

Then the black double doors opened.

Adrian entered.

He took three quick steps.

Stopped.

Claire on the floor.

The table overturned.

Vanessa standing over her.

His face changed instantly.

“Claire?”

Vanessa’s smugness vanished.

“Adrian, wait! It’s not what it looks like!”

He looked at her.

Then at Claire.

His jaw tightened.

“Then explain why she’s on the floor!”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came.

Adrian moved past her.

He dropped to one knee beside Claire and placed one hand gently against her belly.

“Are you hurt?”

Claire shook her head, crying.

“I don’t know.”

His other hand steadied her upper arm.

“What happened?”

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa spoke first.

“She slipped.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Of course.

The richest people in America always had an explanation ready before the victim finished crying.

Adrian looked toward the dry marble.

No spill.

No rug.

Nothing.

“You said she slipped.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She was upset.”

“About what?”

No answer.

Claire whispered:

“She told me I should leave before the baby is born.”

Adrian went still.

Vanessa snapped:

“That is not what I said.”

Claire looked at her.

“You said your family would never accept a child with my blood.”

Silence.

Adrian slowly stood.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Only briefly.

But Claire saw it.

Fear.

Then Vanessa looked down at Claire again.

A tiny restrained smirk returned.

As though even now she believed class would save her.

Adrian noticed.

“What’s funny?”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Her eyes moved upward.

Toward the ceiling.

There, above all three of them, was a white dome security camera.

Black lens.

Small red light.

Recording.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Claire saw the terror on her face.

And understood something before Adrian did.

May you like

Vanessa was not afraid the camera had seen the table fall.

She was afraid it had recorded what happened before Claire ended up on the floor.
