Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Was Supposed to Replace ClaireThe silence after the camera went dark felt worse than the recording.

Claire looked at Vanessa.
“Whoever was watching heard you confess.”
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“No.”
“You said yes.”
“I was under pressure.”
Claire almost smiled.
Now Vanessa understood how quickly emotion could be weaponized.
Adrian looked at her.
“You wanted to replace my wife.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Your family wanted me.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
Claire watched him.
The same words she had used earlier.
Truth had a strange way of teaching language.
Vanessa finally answered.
“Yes.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
Claire felt something complicated.
Not jealousy.
Not anymore.
Clarity.
Vanessa had not simply wanted Adrian.
She wanted the position.
The house.
The name.
The approval Claire had spent years being denied.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You think she loves you more than I do?”
Adrian looked at her.
“That no longer matters.”
Her face changed.
He continued.
“You saw my pregnant wife on the floor and cared more about a trust.”
Claire looked away.
The sentence hurt because Adrian’s own family had done the same in quieter ways.
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You’re pretending you’re better.”
Adrian said nothing.
“You knew the marriage activated the trust.”
Claire went still.
Vanessa continued.
“You never told her.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“You let her believe this was romance.”
Claire looked at him.
The wound reopened.
Because Vanessa was cruel.
But she was not entirely wrong.
Adrian stepped toward Claire.
“I did love you.”
She looked at him.
“Did?”
His face collapsed.
“Do.”
Silence.
Claire wanted to believe him.
Maybe she did.
But love built beside hidden financial incentives still had questions.
She asked:
“If the trust did not exist, would you have married me?”
Adrian answered immediately.
“Yes.”
Vanessa laughed.
Claire looked at her.
“You know something.”
Vanessa smiled sadly.
“Ask him who introduced you.”
Claire stared.
Adrian went pale.
No.
Again.
Another arranged coincidence.
Claire looked at him.
“Who?”
He said nothing.
“Adrian.”
“My mother.”
Silence.
Claire closed her eyes.
Of course.
The gallery opening.
The accidental introduction.
The charming dinner.
All possibly arranged.
Adrian continued quickly.
“I didn’t know why.”
“But she did.”
“Yes.”
Claire looked toward the dead camera.
Then at the mansion.
The family had not welcomed her despite her background.
They had selected her because of it.
A wife outside the bloodline.
A perfect legal trigger.
The poor girl had never accidentally entered the billionaire family.
She had been recruited.
The humiliation was almost unbearable.
Vanessa saw it.
“You were useful.”
Adrian turned.
“Enough.”
Claire raised a hand.
“No.”
She looked at Vanessa.
“Let her finish.”
Vanessa smiled.
“The family needed someone with no competing dynasty.”
“No political connections.”
“No financial leverage.”
“Someone grateful.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
Grateful.
There it was again.
The word used to make poor people ashamed of wanting equality.
Vanessa continued.
“You were ideal.”
Adrian said:
“She became my wife.”
Vanessa replied:
“That was the problem.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“You stopped being grateful.”
Silence.
The sentence exposed the entire structure.
The family had wanted an outsider.
Not an equal.
Claire looked at the marble.
Then at her belly.
Her child had not even been born, and already people were calculating ownership around it.
She whispered:
“This ends now.”
Adrian looked at her.
“What does?”
Claire turned toward the camera.
“The trust.”
Vanessa went pale.
“You can’t.”
Claire stared.
“Watch me.”
For the first time, Vanessa looked more frightened than angry.
Because if Claire rejected the trust, the entire plan to replace her became meaningless.
Then a hidden wall panel beside the camera clicked open.
A small speaker activated.
A woman’s voice filled the corridor.
Older.
Controlled.
Familiar to Adrian.
He went white.
“Mother.”
Claire stopped breathing.
Adrian’s mother had been listening live.
And her first words were not an apology.
May you like
They were:
“Claire, do not make an emotional decision.”
