Chapter 15 - The Mother Who Planned to Remove Her Own HusbandEmily looked at Thomas.

“Is that true?”

He said nothing.

Her heart broke before the answer came.

“Yes.”

The ballroom seemed to tilt.

Her parents had always been the great Whitmore love story.

Magazine profiles.

Charity galas.

Anniversary photographs.

Thomas had spoken about Catherine as though grief had turned love into religion.

Now Emily learned that before her mother died, she had been preparing to remove him from the Foundation.

“Why?”

Thomas looked toward Eleanor.

“Because of the reserve.”

Emily nodded.

“The eighty-four million.”

“Yes.”

“You used hidden money.”

“To keep programs alive.”

“And Mom found out.”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

Thomas's eyes filled.

“That I had become everything we promised each other we wouldn't become.”

Silence.

Emily looked away.

That sentence hurt because Thomas did not defend himself.

Victor stepped closer.

“Catherine believed good work could not excuse bad systems.”

Thomas replied:

“She also knew closing those programs would hurt real people.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“And you used those people as a shield.”

Emily looked between them.

Again.

The impossible argument.

Institutions always found vulnerable people to place between themselves and accountability.

Employees.

Patients.

Students.

Families.

If the truth came out, ordinary people might suffer.

Therefore, powerful people argued, the truth-tellers should stay quiet.

Emily looked at her father.

“Did Mom hate you?”

Thomas's face collapsed.

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she told me she didn't.”

“When?”

“The night before her surgery.”

Emily froze.

“You saw her?”

“Yes.”

Victor looked surprised.

Eleanor too.

Thomas continued.

“She told me she still loved me.”

His voice broke.

“But she also told me love was not a qualification for power.”

Emily closed her eyes.

That sounded like Catherine.

Tender.

Brutal.

True.

Thomas continued.

“She asked me to step down.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

Honest.

Devastating.

Emily opened her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because I believed the Foundation needed me.”

There it was.

The sentence almost every powerful person eventually used.

Needed me.

Not wanted.

Not rewarded.

Needed.

Emily looked at Eleanor's dissolution order.

One signature could end the Foundation.

One different path could preserve it and expose everything.

Neither option was clean.

Then Logan spoke.

“Why does she get to decide?”

Everyone turned.

He looked furious again.

“She didn't build the Foundation.”

Emily stared.

Logan continued.

“She didn't run it.”

“She spent her life protected by it.”

“And now because she cried in a wedding dress, she gets control?”

The cruelty was naked.

But beneath it was something more.

Class entitlement.

Logan believed proximity to power made him more qualified than the woman whose inheritance he had tried to steal.

Emily looked at him.

“You're right.”

The room froze.

Logan looked confused.

Emily continued.

“I didn't build it.”

“I didn't run it.”

“I didn't create the hidden reserve.”

“I didn't take workers' pensions.”

“I didn't forge signatures.”

“I didn't design a clause to call women unstable.”

“I didn't plan a public breakdown.”

She stepped closer.

“You all did.”

Silence.

“So maybe the reason I should decide is that I'm the only person here who didn't create the problem.”

Logan had no answer.

Eleanor smiled faintly.

Thomas looked proud and ashamed at once.

Then Rebecca suddenly stepped forward.

“Emily.”

She looked at her.

“There is something else.”

Emily almost laughed.

“Of course.”

Rebecca held out a tablet containing an archived donor schedule.

“Your mother had one final meeting before surgery.”

“With who?”

Rebecca's hand shook.

“With Logan.”

The room froze.

Logan's face went blank.

Emily stared.

“That is impossible.”

He looked at her.

“I never met your mother.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“Not this Logan.”

Everyone frowned.

Then Arthur understood.

“Robert.”

Rebecca nodded.

“Robert Logan Mercer.”

Logan's full father.

The elder Mercer.

The man connected to the hidden accounts.

The man Catherine confronted before her surgery.

Emily looked at Mrs. Mercer.

Her face had lost all color.

Rebecca continued.

“Catherine recorded the meeting.”

Mrs. Mercer whispered:

“No.”

The recording still existed.

And in it, Robert Mercer said something that changed the entire story.

He told Catherine:

“Thomas isn't the one you should remove. He is the only reason Emily is still safe.”

Emily stared at her father.

Safe from who?

Then Robert's voice continued:

“The person who wants your daughter is inside your own family.”

May you like

And the recording ended with Catherine saying one name.

Eleanor.
