The phrase did not feel real.
Her whole life, Thomas had been her father.
The man who taught her to drive.
Waited outside school dances.
Slept in a chair beside her bed when she had pneumonia.
Held her tonight when she ran from Logan.
DNA felt almost insulting compared with memory.
Still, the file existed.
Emily looked at Thomas.
“Do you know about it?”
He did not answer immediately.
That was enough to frighten her.
“Dad.”
“Yes.”
One word.
The room disappeared.
Emily's face emptied.
“You knew there was a paternity review.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Thirty-one years.”
Silence.
She stepped backward.
Thomas looked devastated.
“Emily.”
“No.”
She raised one hand.
“Don't come closer.”
He stopped.
The same man who had protected her from Logan now obeyed.
Emily's voice shook.
“Am I your daughter?”
Thomas answered without hesitation.
“Yes.”
“That is not what I asked.”
His eyes filled.
She continued.
“Biologically.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“I don't know.”
The answer cut deeper than certainty.
Emily sat down.
Not dramatically.
Her body simply needed support.
Catherine's secrets.
Thomas's secrets.
The Foundation.
The trusts.
The false deaths.
The hidden reserve.
And now this.
She whispered:
“Why didn't you test?”
Thomas looked at her.
“Because I didn't care.”
The answer was immediate.
Emily looked up.
He continued.
“You were my daughter.”
“You are my daughter.”
“No file was going to change that.”
Her eyes filled.
It was beautiful.
And still not enough.
“Mom knew?”
“Yes.”
“Who did she think my biological father was?”
Thomas hesitated.
Emily's face hardened.
“Do not protect me.”
He nodded.
“Robert Mercer.”
Silence exploded through the ballroom.
Logan went white.
Mrs. Mercer stopped breathing.
Emily stared.
Robert Mercer.
Logan's father.
The man Catherine confronted before surgery.
The banker involved in Halden.
If true, Logan might be her half-brother.
Emily turned toward him.
He looked sick.
“No.”
Mrs. Mercer whispered:
“It isn't true.”
Everyone turned.
She shook her head.
“It can't be.”
Thomas looked at her.
“Why?”
“Robert never told me.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“Apparently silence was a family tradition.”
Mrs. Mercer flinched.
Arthur asked:
“When was the review created?”
Thomas answered:
“After Emily was born.”
“Who ordered it?”
“Eleanor.”
Everyone turned toward the old matriarch.
Her face became unreadable.
Emily looked at her.
“You tested me?”
Eleanor said:
“I investigated.”
“Why?”
“Because Catherine's pregnancy happened during a period of separation from Thomas.”
Emily stared at her father.
He looked away.
Another secret.
Thomas said:
“We separated for four months.”
“Why?”
“The Foundation.”
Of course.
Even her conception had happened inside a conflict over power.
Thomas continued.
“Catherine discovered the first reserve discrepancies.”
“She left.”
“And met Robert?”
“Yes.”
Mrs. Mercer closed her eyes.
Emily asked:
“Were they together?”
Thomas's voice broke.
“I don't know.”
The honesty hurt.
Then Eleanor spoke.
“Robert believed Emily might be his.”
Logan stepped backward.
“No.”
Emily looked at him.
Neither knew where to put their eyes.
The marriage.
The engagement.
The kiss.
The wedding.
The possibility was horrifying.
Mrs. Mercer shouted:
“Stop this!”
Everyone turned.
She was crying now.
Not elegant tears.
Raw ones.
“Robert was not Emily's father.”
Eleanor stared.
“How do you know?”
Mrs. Mercer looked at Emily.
Because she knew the truth.
Emily felt it.
“Say it.”
The older woman shook her head.
“Say it.”
Mrs. Mercer looked at Thomas.
Then Eleanor.
Finally Emily.
“Because Robert was sterile.”
Silence.
Logan stared at his mother.
“What?”
“He could not have children.”
The room went still.
Logan's face collapsed.
Then realization arrived.
“If Dad was sterile…”
Mrs. Mercer began sobbing.
Logan whispered:

“Then who is my father?”
And the paternity file meant for Emily suddenly opened a second family secret.
