Chapter 2 - The Camera Hidden in the Vase

The camera had been recording the hallway for weeks.

Vanessa lunged toward the broken pieces, but Michael reached them first and removed the memory card with a hand that would not stop shaking.

She called the device private security equipment and warned him that viewing it without trustee authorization could violate the court order she claimed already existed.

Michael ignored her and carried the children into the study, where he inserted the card into his laptop.

The oldest file showed Vanessa questioning Noah and Lily about their father’s schedule.

She told them Michael cared more about investors than family and promised they would receive larger bedrooms, private tutors and a swimming pool if they told a judge they wanted to live with her.

The children repeatedly refused.

Another recording showed Vanessa ordering a housekeeper named Rosa to sign a statement describing Michael as negligent.

Rosa said the accusation was false.

Vanessa threatened to cancel the visa sponsorship of Rosa’s adult daughter and remove the family from staff housing.

Michael felt sick.

For years, his wealthy relatives had praised themselves for providing jobs to immigrant workers, yet they used housing and legal status as chains whenever an employee spoke honestly.

Vanessa insisted she was protecting the children from an absent father.

She said Michael had spent months traveling while she handled school meetings, meals and medical appointments.

Michael admitted he had been away, but only because the family company ordered him to negotiate a merger after his brother’s death.

Vanessa reminded him that the company paid for the mansion.

To her, money erased motive.

Noah then explained that the vase had not fallen accidentally.

Vanessa had placed it near the edge and told the children to walk past it.

When they refused, she knocked it down herself and accused them of lying.

The scene had been designed to make them appear destructive.

Michael searched the final recording.

It showed Vanessa speaking to an attorney in the same hallway.

“The children will be afraid by the hearing,” she said.

“And Michael will look unstable when he defends them.”

The attorney’s face came into view.

It was Judge Robert Hale, the family-court judge assigned to Michael’s case.
