Chapter 4 - The Will They Buried With Her

Elena’s letter explained that she had discovered money missing from the Bennett Children’s Trust.

Vanessa, who served as temporary financial manager during Elena’s illness, had transferred millions into luxury-development funds controlled by Judge Hale’s brother.

When Elena confronted her, Vanessa claimed the family could not survive another scandal and reminded her that Michael’s reputation depended on investor confidence.

Elena planned to report the transfers.

Three days later, she collapsed at a charity dinner.

The family physician called it an undiagnosed heart condition and discouraged an independent autopsy.

Michael had been devastated and accepted every answer because the same wealthy professionals who managed the family’s affairs assured him there was nothing suspicious.

Now Elena’s letter accused Vanessa of replacing her medication and pressuring staff to destroy records.

Michael felt rage at his cousin, but shame at himself.

He had trusted titles, family history and expensive credentials more than the women who actually cared for Elena.

Rosa admitted she had seen Vanessa enter Elena’s bedroom carrying an unmarked pharmacy bag.

She remained silent because Vanessa threatened to report Rosa’s daughter to immigration authorities and evict the family from the estate cottage.

Michael asked why she never came to him.

Rosa looked at the marble walls and said, “People like us do not know which rich person is safe until another one destroys us.”

The sentence cut through every illusion Michael had about being different from his family.

His kindness had never removed the power imbalance.

Employees still depended on his name for food, shelter and legal stability.

The hidden safe contained copies of pharmacy receipts, trust transfers and voice recordings.

One file captured Judge Hale telling Vanessa that a dead mother’s wishes could be neutralized if the surviving father was portrayed as emotionally unstable.

Another showed Vanessa asking how frightened the children needed to become before a court would call her indispensable.

Michael sent the files to a federal attorney outside Los Angeles County.

Before the upload completed, the mansion’s internet shut down.

The private security doors locked.

Vanessa appeared at the study entrance with two guards.

She said the deputies had left, the judge’s order remained active and Michael was now trespassing in the home his family company owned.

Then one guard removed his badge and addressed her by a different name.

“Ms. Vale,” he said, “the Bennetts want the children moved before midnight.”
