Victoria laughed in disbelief.
“You cannot give a banquet server control over a billion-dollar estate.”
Leah looked at the Thanksgiving table.
“You trusted me to carry crystal worth more than my mother’s apartment.”
“You trusted me with your food.”
“Your keys.”
“Mrs. Harrington’s medication schedule.”
A pause.
“You only question my judgment when I can say no to you.”
Eleanor asked Leah to activate the emergency clause.
The authority was limited.
Leah could not spend family money.
She could not sell the mansion.
She could freeze the housing sale, protect resident leases and organize an employee election.
That was enough.
Victoria stepped toward Ethan.
“You cannot allow this humiliation.”
He looked at his mother’s locked side room.
“You created it.”
Leah opened the trust portal.
Her hands shook.
Then she selected the emergency protection order.
The apartment sale froze.
Victoria’s development fee disappeared.
Family withdrawals from the housing reserve stopped.
Employee wages, pensions and repairs remained active.
Victoria’s phone displayed one failed authorization after another.
“You froze our accounts.”
Leah remained calm.
“No.”
“I separated your money from theirs.”
The employees joined an emergency meeting from apartment kitchens, staff rooms and retirement residences.
They voted overwhelmingly to reject the redevelopment.
Permanent resident protections passed.
Workers received elected seats on the trust board.
For the first time, the people serving Thanksgiving dinner controlled whether their own homes could be sold.
