Chapter 9 - The Hidden Brother

Charles entered the dining room through the same concealed passage.
He wore no coat.
No luggage.
Only a dark suit and the expression of a man whose plan had already failed.
Ethan stared at him.
“You locked Mom in that room?”
Charles shook his head.
“Victoria handled the photograph.”
Victoria looked at him in disbelief.
“You told me Eleanor only needed to miss the trust meeting.”
“You chose how to keep her away.”
The betrayal became visible.
Victoria had believed she was a partner.
Charles had designed the transaction so she would absorb the public blame.
The forged approvals carried Eleanor’s credentials.
The development company publicly belonged to Victoria.
Charles remained hidden behind a private trust.
If the plan succeeded, he received the properties.
If it failed, Victoria looked like the greedy daughter-in-law.
Eleanor looked at her younger son.
“Why?”
Charles’s answer came coldly.
“You were preserving apartments worth a fortune for people who no longer serve this family.”
Leah stared at him.
“They served you long enough to pay for them.”
Charles ignored her.
“This is not about servants.”
“It is now,” Eleanor replied.
The employee board permanently canceled the sale.
Charles’s trust access was suspended.
Victoria’s consulting payments entered restitution review.
Every delayed staff bonus was released.
The Thanksgiving food was moved upstairs.
Employees and residents were invited to eat at the main table.
Not as charity.
As owners.
Victoria watched Leah take the seat beside Eleanor.
“You think sitting there makes you one of them?”
Leah answered quietly:
“No.”
“It proves this table was never only yours.”

Then Charles placed one final envelope before Eleanor.
“The apartments are not the real reason Father hid Clara’s share.”
