Chapter 1 - The Photograph
The champagne struck Daniel’s sleeve first.
Then it splashed across Maya’s gray server dress.
“I’m so sorry, sir.”
Daniel stared at the stain as though she had poured it on his name rather than his jacket.
“Watch what you’re doing!”
His hand moved sharply.
Maya turned her face and raised one hand instinctively. The sudden motion snapped the chain around her neck.
An antique bronze locket fell onto the pale stone terrace.
The metallic sound was small.
But Claire heard it.
The bride-to-be looked down from her champagne gown and diamond ring. Her relaxed smile disappeared.
She knelt beside the pool and lifted the locket with trembling fingers.
The oval engraving matched an object she had seen only once—inside her father’s private desk after his funeral.
Claire opened it.
A black-and-white portrait stared back at her.
A young man in a suit and bow tie.
Her father, Julian Whitmore.
Claire looked at Maya.
“Where did you get this?”
Maya’s eyes were wet, but her voice remained steady.
“My mother gave it to me.”
Claire’s breath caught.
“That’s my father.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Claire, she probably stole it from the house.”
Maya’s humiliation deepened.
A wealthy man had spilled the champagne.
Raised his hand.
Then decided the waitress must also be a thief.
Claire ignored him.
“What was your mother’s name?”
“Evelyn Brooks.”
Claire went completely still.
She stepped forward and embraced Maya before the watching guests could turn the moment into another accusation.
Maya remained rigid with shock.
Then slowly returned the embrace.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You are embarrassing us in front of investors.”
Claire looked over Maya’s shoulder.
“No.”
“You did that when you assumed her uniform made her guilty.”
She opened the locket again.
Behind the photograph was a folded strip of paper.
