Chapter 8 - The Dead Witness

Maya’s face hardened.

“Someone used my mother’s name.”

The witness record included a photograph.

It showed a Black woman in a gray server uniform signing beside Claire.

The face was not Evelyn’s.

It was Maya’s.

The image had been taken at a hotel charity dinner two years earlier.

Maya had signed a delivery receipt for rented glassware.

Someone cropped the photograph, changed the document beneath her hand and used her mother’s identity in the caption.

The fraud relied on class invisibility.

A server signing a delivery form drew no attention.

Her image could be collected, altered and attached to documents worth hundreds of millions.

Daniel looked at Maya.

“Did you work at Mercer events before today?”

“Sixteen.”

He had walked past her repeatedly.

Never remembered her.

That made the impersonation easier.

The family attorney traced the forged witness package to Vanessa Cole, Daniel’s chief legal adviser.

Not the woman at the reception.

A different Vanessa.

The adviser had prepared the merger, the loan and the unresolved-heir report.

Daniel had dismissed her six weeks earlier after discovering private consulting payments.

He told the board she resigned for personal reasons.

Claire asked why he had hidden the payments.

Daniel admitted the truth.

Vanessa threatened to expose his unauthorized loan.

He offered her a confidential settlement.

Once again, wealth attempted to solve wrongdoing with silence.

The worker board opened Vanessa’s archived messages.

She had not created the worker-share fraud.

She discovered it.

Then decided to profit.

She forged Evelyn’s witness identity and Claire’s attachment to ensure the loan closed.

After Daniel dismissed her, she began sending evidence to an unknown recipient.

The antique locket had been returned to Maya through that recipient.

Maya looked at the broken chain.

“My mother gave me this before she died.”

The jeweler’s report contradicted her.

The hidden legal compartment had been installed only six months earlier.

Someone had secretly replaced Maya’s original locket with a modified duplicate.

Then the terrace camera showed who handled it last.

Claire.
