Daniel had attended Celeste’s closed-casket funeral in that same mansion.
Victoria claimed Celeste died in a private clinic after a sudden illness.
There had been no body Daniel was permitted to see, only paperwork signed by Ashford doctors and attorneys.
Now her earring lay beneath his desk.
Victoria called it an old piece of jewelry.
Lucy shook her head.
“The woman was wearing the other one.”
Victoria turned toward her.
“You are a child. You saw a shadow and invented a story.”
Lucy’s voice trembled but did not break.
“You call me confused because my dad fixed your lights instead of sitting at your table.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
The cruelty was familiar.
Ashford workers were praised as loyal until they witnessed something expensive enough to matter.
Then they became dishonest, unstable, or greedy.
Daniel opened the hidden drawer in his desk.
Inside was a medical report declaring him temporarily incompetent.
It had been signed that morning.
If he remained unconscious, control of Ashford Holdings would transfer to Victoria.
The witness signature belonged to Thomas Bennett.
Lucy stared at it.
“My dad would never sign that.”
Then Daniel turned the page.
