Chapter 3 - The Land Deal

Mason claimed the contract was only an offer.

Walt unfolded the final page.

It had already been signed.

The sale included the clubhouse, the repair shop and twelve acres surrounding the old garage.

The land sat outside Austin, near a highway expansion and a growing luxury district.

For decades, nobody considered it valuable.

Mechanics stored parts there.

Veterans held support meetings there.

Working families attended free repair weekends because dealership prices were beyond their reach.

Then wealthy developers arrived.

Suddenly the dusty acreage became an opportunity.

Mason planned to sell it without telling the members who had paid dues for years.

“What happens to the clubhouse?” one rider asked.

Mason lifted his chin.

“We relocate.”

“Where?”

“A smaller property.”

Lena read the redevelopment schedule.

The new property was a leased metal building thirty miles away.

The existing land would become gated condominiums, restaurants and a private automotive club charging six-figure membership fees.

The working-class riders who built Iron Ridge would be replaced by investors wearing leather on weekends.

Luke had discovered the sale.

That was why he disappeared.

Mason looked at Lena.

“Your brother became unstable when he learned change was necessary.”

She stared at him.

“You called him unstable because he objected.”

“He was sentimental.”

“He knew the land wasn’t yours.”

Silence.

Walt opened the steel door.

Behind it was a concrete staircase descending beneath the clubhouse.

No one rushed.

They moved carefully, following the sound of the idling engine.

At the bottom, the old garage lights were already on.

A motorcycle stood running on a repair platform.

Luke was nowhere in sight.

May you like

But beside the bike lay his denim vest.

And beneath it was the original Iron Ridge property ledger.
