Chapter 1 - NO ONE LEAVES THIS HOUSE

Ethan came home and found Leah on her knees in a pool of red wine.
That was the first thing he saw.
Not Victoria.
Not the crystal glasses.
Not the open black doors behind him.
Leah.
Bent low on the white marble.
Both hands pressing a cloth into the dark-red spill.
Crying.
A tiny trace of blood beneath her nose.
She looked up.
“I’m sorry, sir…”
Her voice shook.
“I tried to clean it.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
Victoria stood behind her.
Champagne satin blouse.
Beige trousers.
Gold earrings.
One stemmed glass of red wine in her hand.
And a small smile.
“She’s just a maid.”
Victoria lifted the glass.
“Don’t make this dramatic.”
The mansion went silent.
That was the first crack.
Ethan looked at Leah again.
Her hands were trembling.
The white cloth was already soaked red.
Three crystal glasses lay on the marble.
Unbroken.
Nothing about the scene made sense.
He pulled out his phone.
“Get here now.”
Victoria’s smile faded.
Ethan continued.
“Bring the security footage.”
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
Enough.
Then Ethan looked directly at her.
“No one leaves this house.”
Silence.
Victoria lowered her glass.
“You’re embarrassing yourself.”
Ethan did not answer.
He walked toward Leah.
Slowly.
Carefully.
“Did you spill the wine?”
Leah opened her mouth.
Victoria answered first.
“Yes.”
Too fast.
Wrong move.
Ethan looked at her.
“I asked Leah.”
Victoria went still.
That was the second crack.
Leah swallowed.
“No.”
One word.
Quiet.
Clear.
Victoria laughed.
“Of course she says that now.”
Ethan crouched several feet away from Leah.
He did not touch her.
He looked at the small mark beneath her nose.
“What happened?”
Leah immediately looked toward Victoria.
Not at Ethan.
Toward Victoria.
That was enough.
Ethan’s face hardened.
Victoria said,
“She backed into the console.”
Leah closed her eyes.
Again.
Too fast.
Ethan noticed.
“You saw it happen?”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“Yes.”
Leah whispered,
“No.”
The room changed.
Ethan looked at her.
Leah finally raised her eyes.
“She wasn’t there when it happened.”
Victoria stopped breathing.
That was the third crack.
Then the security system chimed.
The footage had arrived.
Ethan opened the recording.
The first frame showed the empty foyer.
Then Leah entered carrying fresh towels.
She placed them on the console.
Victoria walked in behind her.
Holding the bottle of wine.
Leah turned.
They spoke.
No sound yet.
Then Victoria deliberately lifted the bottle.
And poured the wine across the marble.
Ethan froze.
Victoria went pale.
The video continued.
She pointed toward the floor.
Leah shook her head.
Victoria stepped closer.
Leah backed away.
Her shoulder caught the edge of the marble console.
She raised one hand to her face.
Then Victoria handed her the white cloth.
And pointed down again.
Ethan stopped breathing.
Leah had not spilled anything.
She had been forced to clean the scene Victoria created.
Then Ethan noticed one more thing.
Before Leah knelt, Victoria looked directly toward the security camera.
May you like
And smiled.
Like she knew Ethan would eventually watch.
