Chapter 3 - The Wife They Turned Into a Servant
Richard laughed once, but the sound carried no confidence.
He said Elena had brown eyes, straight hair and a scar near her chin.
Maya removed a thin layer of concealing makeup and revealed the scar.
She explained that medication, weight loss, hair dye and years of hiding had changed her appearance, but not enough to fool a child who still remembered her scent.
Noah stepped toward her.
Richard moved between them.
He accused Maya of exploiting Elena’s disappearance to gain access to the Whitmore estate.
Vivian supported him immediately.
She reminded everyone that Maya had been hired through a domestic-service agency and passed a background check under the name Maya Torres.
Maya answered that Torres was her birth name.
Before marrying Richard, she had worked at a public hospital and lived with her mother in East Boston.
The Whitmores had pressured her to abandon the name because it sounded too ordinary for charity galas and society pages.
Richard said Elena willingly embraced his world.
Maya corrected him.
She had tolerated it because she loved him.
The family treated her nursing degree as embarrassing, her Spanish-speaking relatives as inconvenient and her concern for staff wages as evidence that she did not understand wealth.
After Noah was born, Elena discovered money disappearing from a medical foundation established in his name.
When she challenged the board, the Whitmores described her as emotionally unstable.
A family physician prescribed medication she did not need.
A private evaluator declared her unfit to care for Noah.
Then she was told that if she fought publicly, Richard would use the report to take permanent custody.
Richard insisted he had never authorized such a threat.
Maya asked why he never searched for her after she vanished.
He said private investigators confirmed she left the country.
She answered that those investigators worked for Vivian.
Noah listened as the adults discussed his mother like a disputed asset.
He asked why she returned as a maid instead of coming through the front door.
Maya said the family had guards, lawyers and court orders waiting at every front entrance.
The staff agency was the only place their wealth did not expect her.
She entered the mansion to find proof and stay close to Noah.
Then one of the security guards quietly removed his earpiece.
He revealed that Vivian had ordered them to monitor Maya for months.
The guard opened his phone.
