Chapter 6 - The Doctor Who Sold Death Certificates
Dr. Sloan spoke with the confidence of a man who had testified in court for billionaires, politicians and corporate families.
He explained that Maya’s fingerprints appeared on Elena’s final hospital paperwork because she had been working as a nursing aide under another name.
According to him, Maya stole Elena’s identity after witnessing her death.
Vivian called the theory tragic but believable.
She said a poor employee surrounded by luxury might convince herself she deserved another woman’s life.
Noah moved closer to Maya.
He did not understand legal records, but he understood who had held him during nightmares and who had spoken about his mother with love rather than contempt.
Maya rolled up her sleeve.
A small surgical scar crossed her inner arm.
She said Richard was present when she received it after donating blood during Noah’s emergency surgery as an infant.
Richard remembered holding her hand.
Dr. Sloan claimed medical records could be copied.
Maya then described the private nickname Richard used during their first year of marriage, the location of a hidden crack inside their wedding ring and the final sentence he whispered before she disappeared.
Richard’s face collapsed.
No impostor could know all three.
Charles accused Sloan of creating false death certificates for wealthy families seeking control of elderly relatives, inconvenient spouses and trust beneficiaries.
Rosa produced copies taken from his private office.
Twenty-three people connected to Whitmore properties had been declared dead, incompetent or missing shortly before assets changed hands.
Most were domestic workers, retirees or relatives without independent wealth.
Their lives were administratively erased because they could not afford immediate legal challenges.
Sloan attempted to leave.
The guards blocked him.
He blamed Vivian and said he had only provided professional services.
Vivian blamed Charles for building a family culture in which reputation mattered more than truth.
Charles did not deny it.
He admitted teaching his children that wealth made consequences negotiable.
His late remorse could not restore Elena’s years with Noah.
Sloan offered to testify if granted protection.
He revealed that Elena’s false death certificate had not been ordered by Vivian.
The payment came from Richard’s personal account.
Richard stared at the transaction record.
He had never seen it.
Then his phone displayed a banking alert.
The transfer had been authorized using his voice.
A recording played from the file.
Richard could be heard saying, “Make sure Elena Whitmore never returns.”
