Chapter 4 - THE HALLWAY THAT REMEMBERED EVERYTHING.
The hallway footage showed Vanessa entering the staff corridor with the diamond bracelet in her hand.
She checked both directions, opened Maya’s locker with a master key, and placed the bracelet inside the backpack.
No one spoke when the video ended.
The same people who had examined Maya’s rent notices now avoided her eyes.
The estate manager quietly returned her name badge, but Maya did not take it.
An apology given only after undeniable evidence did not erase the ease with which they had believed the worst about her.
Vanessa insisted the bracelet had been a test.
She claimed she suspected Maya was manipulating Mrs. Harrington and wanted to observe how she reacted under pressure.
The family attorney warned her to stop talking.
Daniel asked Vanessa why she had raised the cane.
Vanessa said Mrs. Harrington had become confused and aggressive.
She claimed Maya had been encouraging the older woman to cancel Daniel’s wedding and remove Vanessa from the family trust.
Mrs. Harrington’s expression sharpened.
“I wanted her removed because she has been bringing me papers while I’m medicated.”
Daniel turned toward his mother.
Mrs. Harrington explained that Vanessa had replaced two members of the nursing staff, changed the pharmacy schedule, and repeatedly asked her to sign documents she could not read clearly.
Maya had started writing down every visit because no one else believed the pattern.
Vanessa laughed nervously and called it the imagination of an aging woman.
That cruelty changed the room.
Maya moved beside the wheelchair and opened a hidden pocket sewn beneath the seat cushion.
Inside was a folded copy of the document Vanessa had tried to force Mrs. Harrington to sign.
It transferred medical authority, voting rights, and control of the mansion to Vanessa after the wedding.
Daniel read the final page twice.
His own signature was already on it.
He had never signed the document.
Then the family attorney noticed the witness line.
