Chapter 6 - THE POOR WOMAN THE FAMILY ERASED.

Maya had never told the Harringtons that her mother once worked for their foundation.

Elena Torres had been a licensed practical nurse at a Harrington-funded senior residence twenty years earlier.

She lost her job after reporting missing medication, forged insurance claims, and wealthy donors receiving private services billed to low-income residents.

The official record said Elena had been dismissed for misconduct.

That accusation followed her for the rest of her career.

She worked night shifts, cleaned houses, and died believing no one powerful would ever admit she had told the truth.

Maya became a nurse because she wanted vulnerable people to have at least one person in the room who could not be bought.

When Daniel asked why she had accepted a position inside the Harrington mansion, Maya told him the truth.

She had not come for revenge.

She had come because Mrs. Harrington personally requested a caregiver who spoke Spanish and had experience with medication management.

Vanessa seized on the connection.

She accused Maya of infiltrating the household to punish the family for her mother’s dismissal.

The estate manager immediately looked suspicious again.

Maya realized evidence could change their faces, but class prejudice always waited for a new excuse.

Mrs. Harrington demanded the foundation records from the year Elena was fired.

The family attorney warned that those files had been archived after a confidential settlement.

Maya had never heard of a settlement.

Her mother had received nothing.

Daniel called the archive office and ordered the sealed file delivered.

Vanessa tried to leave the kitchen.

Daniel blocked the doorway without touching her.

“No one leaves until we understand what you were trying to steal.”

Vanessa’s panic became visible.

She stopped pretending the missing camera footage did not matter.

“The recording won’t help you,” she said. “I erased the local file.”

Maya looked again at the blinking light above the cabinet.

“That camera uploads to two places.”

The second backup was not stored in the mansion.

It had been going directly to Mrs. Harrington’s attorney.

And he had just arrived at the front door carrying a sealed laptop.
