The hidden cabinet contained forty-three works taken from displaced artists and reclassified as abandoned property.
Vivian insisted the museum had preserved art that would otherwise have been lost.
Luis answered, “Preservation without consent is theft with climate control.”
The board froze every acquisition connected to the warehouse and summoned independent provenance experts. Several works had been loaned to donors’ homes while artists received nothing.
Gabriel removed his name from the expansion wing and placed his foundation vote under review.
Then Evelyn admitted she had accepted a private settlement from the museum.
Vivian had threatened to place Elsie in another state unless Evelyn stopped the provenance investigation.
“I took the money to keep her close,” Evelyn said. “Other families lost years because I stayed silent.”
Naomi did not excuse her.
“Fear explains silence. It does not return those years.”
Evelyn placed the settlement under restitution control.
The payment record revealed something worse.
