Chapter 6 - THE TEST HELENA NEVER REQUESTED.
Helena had never authorized a DNA test.
Mara had never knowingly given a sample.
Yet the report compared Mara’s genetic profile with Helena’s and confirmed a direct biological relationship.
The test had been ordered through a private laboratory owned by one of Preston’s business partners.
Mara remembered a mandatory employee health screening conducted when she began working at the hotel.
She had been told the cheek swab was required for insurance.
The hotel manager admitted that Camille had requested Mara’s hiring file after noticing the crescent mark during a staff rehearsal.
Camille had known for three months.
She had watched Mara carry plates, clean spilled wine, and accept insults from guests while secretly knowing the server might be the true Whitmore heir.
She had not remained silent out of uncertainty.
She had remained silent because Mara’s existence threatened her inheritance.
Camille insisted she had been protecting her grandmother from emotional manipulation.
But Helena asked why protection required stealing a worker’s medical information.
No one answered.
Mara looked around the ballroom at people who donated publicly to equality programs while privately measuring human worth by last names, schools, and clothing.
The Whitmore Foundation had funded scholarships for poor students.
Its own family had erased a woman for loving someone poor.
Preston attempted one final defense.
He claimed Rosalie eventually learned Mara was alive and chose not to search for her.
He produced a letter bearing Rosalie’s signature.
It stated that she wanted Mara raised away from the Whitmores.
For a moment, Mara’s anger broke into something more painful.
Perhaps her mother had truly abandoned her.
Then Helena examined the paper.
Rosalie always signed her name with a small crescent beneath the final letter.
The mark was missing.
Walter looked at the ink under the chandelier light.
“This letter wasn’t written twenty-six years ago.”
The ink was less than six months old.
