Chapter 7 - THE GRANDDAUGHTER WHO INHERITED THE LIE.
Camille’s elegance disappeared the moment the forged letter was traced to her office.
She admitted printing it but claimed Preston had dictated every word.
Preston called his daughter weak.
Camille called her father a coward.
The family unity displayed in magazine photographs shattered in front of the donors they had spent years trying to impress.
Camille revealed that Preston had known Mara worked at the hotel from the day she was hired.
He instructed management to keep her in service positions where wealthy guests rarely learned employees’ names.
He wanted to observe whether Mara knew anything about her birth.
When she showed no interest in the Whitmore family, he planned to let her remain poor and invisible.
But Camille saw another opportunity.
If she could obtain Mara’s DNA and persuade her to sign away any unknown claims, the trust would pass securely to Camille.
The folder Rosalie had once been forced to sign had been recreated.
Mara had unknowingly signed one page during employee orientation.
The page was later attached to a legal waiver surrendering all rights connected to the Whitmore estate.
Lawrence examined the document and declared it fraudulent.
Preston argued that Mara had no training, no social standing, and no understanding of the responsibilities attached to old money.
Helena asked him whether wealth had made him responsible.
The question silenced the ballroom.
Mara removed her server badge and placed it beside the false waiver.
“You believed I was too poor to matter,” she said. “That is why you left evidence everywhere.”
The hotel’s payroll system showed that Mara had been repeatedly assigned to private Whitmore events despite requesting other shifts.
Someone wanted her close.
Not Preston.
Not Camille.
The requests came from Helena’s personal account.
Helena looked stunned.
She had never submitted them.
Then a new message appeared on the gala coordinator’s tablet.
The sender used Rosalie Whitmore’s original private email address.
