Chapter 7 - The False Bottom

Beneath the ballots was a second ledger.
It documented every transfer from the relief fund.
The missing money had not remained with Victoria or Mason.
Most of it moved through their companies for only a few hours.
Then it entered Black Crown Holdings, an anonymous investment firm.
Black Crown used the money to purchase Harrington Hotel debt.
It also purchased shares from frightened family members during a manufactured financial crisis.
Someone had used workers’ pension money to quietly acquire control of the Harrington company itself.
Victoria stared at the ledger.
“That was not our agreement.”
Mason’s fear deepened.
“The money was supposed to return after the property sale.”
Thomas looked at them.
“You thought you were stealing ninety-six million dollars.”
“Someone used you to buy a billion-dollar company.”
Richard examined Black Crown’s structure.
The anonymous investor now controlled forty-nine percent of Harrington Hospitality.
If the relief fund dissolved, Black Crown would receive the final two percent needed for majority control.
Victoria and Mason had believed the gala completed their private deal.
In reality, it completed someone else’s takeover.
Richard looked at his wife.
“You endangered workers, destroyed careers and deceived me for twenty percent of a company you would never own.”
Victoria’s voice broke.
“I was tired of being treated like a decorative wife.”
Thomas looked at her diamonds.
“So you treated working people like decorative staff.”
Her humiliation did not excuse what she had done.
It explained why she accepted Mason’s offer.
The Harrington family praised Victoria at galas but excluded her from serious business decisions.
Mason promised control.
She chose to gain it by stripping control from people with even less power.
The worker council froze Black Crown’s final acquisition.
But forty-nine percent remained legally purchased.
Richard asked who owned the company.
The ledger named a trustee.
Mason Cole.
Mason stared at it.
“I am not the trustee.”
His Social Security number matched.
His signature matched.
His photograph did not.
Someone had created a second legal identity under his name.
Then Atlas turned away from Mason.
May you like
He walked directly toward Richard.
And alerted to the silver cuff link on Richard’s right wrist.
