Chapter 8 - The Cuff Link
Richard removed the cuff link.
A tiny encrypted storage chip had been hidden beneath the silver crest.
He had worn the pair at board meetings for six years.
Victoria looked horrified.
“I gave those to you.”
“They were an anniversary gift.”
“Mason arranged the security engraving.”
Mason shook his head.
“I sent them to the family technology office.”
The chip contained Richard’s voice samples, fingerprints from the clasp and thousands of movement records.
Someone had used the cuff link to create biometric authorizations in his name.
The same technology approved Black Crown’s purchases.
Richard’s identity had signed transactions while he slept, traveled and hosted charity events.
He looked toward Thomas.
“I have spent years trusting systems Mason controlled.”
Thomas answered:
“And employees were disciplined for forgetting passwords.”
Ordinary workers faced immediate consequences for minor access mistakes.
Executives received invisible shortcuts.
Those shortcuts had allowed someone to impersonate the most powerful man in the company.
Richard’s guilt was not the same as the forger’s.
But he had approved the system without independent oversight.
He had rejected employee requests for shared security authority because he called them operationally unnecessary.
Now one cuff link had controlled billions.
Richard suspended all biometric executive approvals.
No single family member, security chief or private attorney would again authorize trust transactions alone.
Worker representatives received equal control over identity systems tied to employee funds.
The company’s technology vendor entered an external audit.
Mason looked almost relieved.
“That proves I was used too.”
Thomas faced him.
“You forged ballots before anyone used you.”
“You fired workers before anyone used you.”
“You took Atlas from me before anyone used you.”
Being deceived did not erase the harm he willingly caused.
Mason’s authority remained suspended.
His security contracts entered restitution review.
Victoria’s foundation assets were frozen.
Richard’s personal distributions stopped.
Then the technology audit found where the cuff link data had been transmitted.
Not to Mason’s office.
Not to Victoria’s foundation.
