Chapter 4 - The Scratches

Maya had not planned to become the center of the wedding.
She had planned to survive it.
That was what made her voice so powerful now—there was no performance in it, only fear and anger worn thin.
“When I heard her on the phone, I stepped back into the service hall,” Maya said. “She saw me. Five minutes later, I was being accused of stealing.”
Claire laughed once, bitterly. “You expect him to believe that?”
Maya met Daniel’s eyes. “He doesn’t have to believe me. He only has to believe the bracelet was found in the suite where she told them to keep me.”
Daniel turned toward the ballroom manager, who had been standing silently near the wall. “Was it?”
The man hesitated, then nodded.
“In the bridal room vanity drawer, sir.”
Claire went pale.
The humiliation hit the room in waves. A maid had been trapped, accused, and prepared for removal while wealthy guests sipped champagne under crystal light. The injustice looked uglier now because everyone could see how easily it had been arranged.
Daniel’s voice dropped. “Why?”
Claire’s answer came too quickly. “Because she was dangerous.”
Maya laughed through tears. “To your wedding? Or to your paperwork?”
Daniel took one slow breath. “What is the employee reserve?”
For the first time, Maya hesitated.
Not because she didn’t know.
Because saying it aloud would drag her mother’s name back into the same room where people had destroyed it.

And when she finally spoke, the bride stopped looking offended and started looking cornered.
“My mother died trying to prove it existed.”
