Chapter 7 - The Maid’s Vote

Leah stared at her name.
“I don’t own those properties.”
Arthur read the clause carefully.
She did not receive the assets personally.
She became temporary steward until the workers and tenants elected representatives.
Daniel laughed.
“A maid cannot control a multibillion-dollar portfolio.”
Claire looked at him.
“She noticed I was alive while billionaires toasted my memory.”
The sentence silenced the room.
Leah’s authority was precise.
She could freeze property sales.
Restore terminated workers.
Protect tenant leases.
Suspend transfers benefiting anyone involved in Claire’s false death declaration.
Daniel stepped toward her.
“You press that button, and thousands of employees could lose their jobs.”
Leah looked at the payroll ledger.
“They were already losing wages.”
She activated the emergency stewardship clause.
The apartment sale froze.
Daniel’s executive authority froze.
Family dividends connected to the housing portfolio stopped.
Employee wages, building repairs and tenant protections remained active.
Daniel’s phone displayed one failed transaction after another.
“You froze everything.”
“No.”
Leah remained calm.
“I protected everything you were trying to sell.”
Former employees received notices restoring their jobs and back pay.
The dismissed maintenance worker’s safety report reappeared in the archive.
It contained photographs of the concealed room behind Claire’s portrait.
The space had not been built as a prison.
It had been created decades earlier as a safe room for domestic workers escaping abusive employers.
The Vale family later sealed the outer entrance.
Daniel had turned a workers’ refuge into Claire’s confinement.
