Chapter 8 - Arthur’s Key
Claire slowly looked at her father.
Arthur appeared stunned.
“I gave Daniel a key to the old service passage.”
“When?”
“Two years ago.”
“Why?”
“He said the mansion required emergency renovation access.”
Daniel almost smiled.
Arthur’s carelessness had helped him.
Claire saw it.
“So everyone trusted the man in the tuxedo.”
Arthur lowered his eyes.
“Yes.”
“And ignored the people in uniforms.”
“Yes.”
He did not excuse himself.
That mattered, but it did not erase what happened.
Arthur had dismissed Leah’s mother’s ownership claim years earlier because family counsel called it domestic-staff confusion.
He had approved Daniel’s renovation authority without inspecting the plans.
He had nearly signed Claire’s death declaration because prominent attorneys assured him everything was proper.
Privilege had not made Arthur cruel.
It had made negligence comfortable.
Arthur transferred his family voting rights into independent review.
He ordered every employee complaint reopened.
Daniel looked at him.
“You are surrendering control because a maid kept a notebook?”
Arthur answered:
“No.”
“I am surrendering control because she did what I was too important to do.”
The board voted immediately.
Daniel was removed as interim chief executive.
The apartment sale was canceled.
The staff retirement fund was restored with interest.
The memorial foundation was dissolved, and every dollar returned to employee accounts.
Claire stood beneath her own portrait as workers received messages confirming back pay.
For the first time that night, the room felt like a memorial.
Not for Claire.
For every truth the family had buried.
