Chapter 1 - The Raised Hand
“I don’t care who you are. You mustn’t hit someone who can’t defend herself.”
Leah caught Victoria’s forearm before the slap reached Mrs. Harrington.
The young waitress stood between the wheelchair and the diamonds, holding Victoria’s raised arm firmly but carefully. Behind them, the charity-gala guests stopped speaking.
Victoria stared at Leah’s black uniform as though the fabric itself were an insult.
“Do you know who I am?”
Leah’s hands trembled.
“Yes.”
“Then release me.”
Measured footsteps crossed the ballroom.
Mr. Arthur Harrington advanced beneath the chandeliers in his dark burgundy tailcoat. The guests shifted aside before he said a word.
“Let her go.”
Leah released Victoria and lowered her hands.
Victoria straightened her gown with a satisfied smile.
“You’re done here.”
Then she noticed Arthur was not looking at Leah.
He was looking at her.
“She was only protecting my mother.”
The smile disappeared.
Mrs. Eleanor Harrington sat upright in her wheelchair, frightened but conscious.
Arthur crouched beside her.
“Why did Victoria raise her hand?”
Eleanor pointed toward a cream-colored folder on the champagne table.
“She wanted me to sign that before the donor photograph.”
Victoria answered quickly.
“It is a routine foundation document.”
Eleanor looked at Leah.
“Tell him what you heard.”
Victoria’s voice sharpened.
“The waitress heard nothing relevant.”
Leah felt every wealthy guest examining her apron, her inexpensive shoes and the name badge Victoria believed made her disposable.
Still, she spoke.
“Mrs. Harrington refused to sign.”
“And Victoria told her that by tomorrow, everyone would believe she was too confused to control her own money.”
Arthur opened the folder.
The first page transferred Maple House, a residence for retired Harrington employees, to a private development company.
