Chapter 7 - The Third Buyer
Victoria had believed she would control the redevelopment.
Arthur had believed he was authorizing a financial review.
The attorney designed a structure that used both of them.
If Eleanor signed, Victoria’s company purchased Maple House.
The company’s financing terms were impossible to meet.
After six months, the property would default to a private holding company owned by the attorney and several anonymous investors.
The elderly residents would still be removed.
Victoria would lose control.
Arthur would absorb the public scandal.
The attorney would receive the land.
Eleanor looked at Victoria.
“You threatened me for a deal that was also cheating you.”
Victoria’s voice cracked.
“He said the Harringtons would never accept me unless I delivered something valuable.”
The truth beneath her arrogance emerged.
Victoria had married into old money but never felt secure inside it.
Arthur’s relatives called her ambitious when she entered rooms and provincial when she left.
She believed controlling Maple House would prove she belonged.
Instead of rejecting the class cruelty, she directed it downward.
Leah looked at her.
“You were humiliated by wealthy people.”
“So you chose people with less power and made them pay for it.”
Victoria could not answer.
The foundation’s emergency charter required immediate independent oversight whenever a trustee faced coercion.
Eleanor activated it.
Control did not pass to Leah alone.
It moved to a five-member review council:
One Maple House resident.
One foundation employee.
One medical advocate.
One independent trustee.
And one Harrington family representative who had not benefited from the disputed funds.
Arthur was disqualified.
Victoria was disqualified.
Eleanor selected Leah as the employee representative.
Victoria laughed weakly.
“A waitress will oversee a hundred-million-dollar foundation?”
Eleanor answered:
“She knew the difference between service and obedience.”
The council froze the property transfer.
Maple House residents received immediate lease protection.
The repair reserve was restored from restricted family assets.
Victoria was suspended as foundation chair.
